Thanks to everybody who tried to help when I got my family PC infected with coolweb search virus last month! ~ kept hijacking my internet seach engine & sites.

(I think it came via my daughters MSN or my son using a on line games arcade site)

Anyway I elected to get the PC & affected registry rebuilt, so some £120 later, the computer technician who rebuilt my PC has put 3 anti virus programmes on it AVG, spybot and PC Dr on it ~ plus I have just found out I can have legitimate use of McAfee through my employeers "home user" agreement.:bannana: I was using Norton, but not anymore..

I'd advise using any or all of these products , so far they seem quite easy to use, also if you work for a large employer check out any home user benefits .

thanks again to all the guys who helped me out.

AVG sorted me out last week when my (employer loaded!) McAfee failed miserably to get rid of some trojan horse viruses ... spybot also failed, as did Ad-Aware and Spyware doctor ! Use AVG on all my personal PCs, and hasn't let me down so far - very good - for the money ! (Free!)

are you using a paid for version?

I'm currently using their free version but am wondering wether to go the whole hog and buy the full deal

Not paying at the moment - I've got free versions on my home PCs, which I set up some time ago, and they seem to be remaining free ... looks like if you register now, you only get a trial period - 30 / 90 days ? Can't remember. If the full version is as good as the trial or free versions, it would get my money, certainly !

I use AVG pro......it is excellent and licences last two years.

thanks Sym

btw apologies, I should have referred to spyware Dr instead of PC Dr in my posts

We have Sophos AV at work and I have it on my laptop as a home user - it works fine . I also have PC doctor on the lapop which also does a good job - no known viruses to date (touch wood)

Another good practise is to install IE-SPYAD which is free, it adds a load of sites to the RESTRICTED section of Internet Explorer which means that Explorer blocks content from even downloading, I have it set up on my daughters pc which means even if she clicks on one of those "Do you want to stop SPAM" pop-up windows then nothing happens.

There are instructions how to install it here

and here is a link direct to the program file here

or go to this webpage

to read a bit more before you download it - recommended!

The program is a little clunky as it uses a program box - just follow the instructions.
