Vista Home Premium is

it's not 'JUST' an o/s.

It's an o/s with an awful lot of apps/functionality which we used to pay extra for now fully integrated.

It's also the most stable platform that Microsoft have released and seems to lack the ability to eat itself and require reinstalling every 12 months :)

No, there's a lot of extra baggage That's not the same as useful functionality.

And that's part of the problem. MS feel they need to pump up the OS as if it's something more than it really is and give it false value.

I can think of three non-OS add-ons that have limited use. IE, Media Center, and Wordpad. All of these predate Vista. And only Media Center had any visible improvements over XP - and it's not a particularly well thought out piece of software.

LOL.

Apart from disagreeing with the first part of this statement, yes, it's the second that kind of puts the Windows situation in perspective.

vista is the most stable operating system ever (windows wise).

You must be joking push it hard use the resources and it falls over at every opportunity even on seriously high spec machines, everything we have has been rolled back to XP SP3 all problems resolved no more issues,

Will await the trusted reviews of Windows 7 before we make another move or just swap one machine over to 7.This Samsung notebook I am posting on is high spec and brand new and was originally on Vista and was shocking put it on XP and its a different machine.

VISTA = Very Insecure Shambolic Troublesome Application

the 'extra baggage' is what a lot of people want. The ability to record live TV, edit and create movies/slide shows from your cameras (including video), organise and playback all of your media files including BlueRay, storing huge quantities of photographs that are accessible at the click of a mouse. To play games (even the included ones), browse the internet, send email, use instant messenger, have web cam conversations/conferences etc etc etc and even do a bit of word processing (as well as sending faxes) makes Windows so much more than just an operating system, it has become a software/entertainment suite which includes an o/s.

The fact that it is so stable and for many people there is still no viable alternative means Microsoft must be doing something right

Not here and we push it as hard as most people.

The XP machine we have here needs re-starting nearly everyday or it grinds to a halt

All three Vista machines (2 x Ultimate and 1 x Home Premium) are rock solid and only get re-started when software updates dictate it

Just shows the difference people experience with this, I also have friends who think Vista is perfectly stable. I guess it depends on the Apps you are running but its definitely not for us.
