:wallbash:Hi
think may of asked this befor, i have a w124 2.5 D low mls,
every now and then car looses power, can be going up hill ,or on the level,
This used to be when had 1/4 tank full, now happening when 3/4 full,
can go for weeks ,without this happening,
its not instant loss ,it happens gradually ,even if you keep foot on pedal, power drops of,
today i had to pull side motorway, and stop for 10 mins,
car started again but needed foot on pedal and needed reving till car ticked over o.k ,car then drove back rest way home without a problem"
any idea,s? whats first thing i should try?
thanks
steve. :wallbash:

I had a 190 D with the same engine & I found the only permanent solution to the lack of power was to sell the bloody thing & buy something that ran on petrol.

When did you service it last Steve?

It may be in need of an "italian" style tune up too...

Are you running it on straight diesel?

Ok, I have to ask ... what's an "italian" style tune up :o

check for airleaks, change all o-rings in the pipework and replace the fuel filter, pre-filter and fuel tank strainers. (i suspect the fuel tank strainer is your most likely the issue)

see link here:

the way to replace is different on yours, but you get the idea....

if you are replacing the o-rings you may want to consider VITON ones;

i had exact problem in w124 300 td uphill struggle and running rough, solution was replacing a small flexi pipe into the pump, once that is done if still not do good there is a very knowledgable mechanic in north london will tweek the fuel feed into the pump (problem then is in the pump) expensive to replace or recondition again i know somebody who will do that but cost is in the £100s, the tweek means the car will run smoother but use more diesel until the pump gives up the ghost. pm if u need the nos etc

(Ahem - rev the nuts off it so you get lots of smoke coming out of the back...)

Known to clear crap out that might cause sluggish behaviour... :thumb:

I used to do this to my father's car in the 1970s. He drove it very gently and its performance deteriorated over time.

So whenever I visited home - about 6 times a year - I would listen to his concerns about the poor starting, misfiring etc. and said I would sort it out. An hour later I would give him the keys back and ask him to tell me if there was any improvement.

It was always much improved. Then it would gradually deteriorate over a few weeks until I returned and gave it the same treatment.

I refused to tell him what I did - he later told me he thought I took it to a local garage and got them to clean the spark plugs. But all I did was give it a 25 mile run at up to 70 mph, which blew the cobwebs out.

I think it was all down to his driving style.

HI
running on bio at present, (good stuff, clean, well strained, no water in it,)
but have had problem when running on straight deisel as well,
my thoughts where tank strainer first? but being a early saloon ,k redg?
Think you have to remove tank to do strainer ? cars only done 103,000mls so not yet run in ,will do a service on payday, really like to keep it as apart from this problem car,s mint, Thanks

tank strainer.

HI
anyone know if the tank strainer is a merc part only?
as been to local GFS motor factors ,and they didn,t know?they thought it was part of lift pump?:thumb:thanks
steve .o

Just get it from a dealer..... Tank strainer is only about £12 new from mercedes & comes with the o-ring needed. no where near the lift pump so they dont know what they are talking about.

it can also just be removed, and cleaned up in some new diesel or gasoline.

if you're running on bio and never changed/looked at the strainer before, all my money is on the stainer!

also replace the other filters too at the same time!

this is a pic of a W124 estate one and now uses a W210 part number. NOTE: W124 Saloon is different and uses a different part number. MB Dealer will order it based on your chassis number. its up in the drivers side wheel arch i believe on a saloon. no need to remove the tank. Some people just remove the strainer completely (ie cut off the mesh bit), but i havnt myself. the pre-filter should then catch anything, but i prefer to leave the strainer in, atleast for now.

regardless how clean your bio/veg is it WILL clean the inside of the fuel tank out, meaning all the cr@p that was stuck to the side of the tank/bottom will now be clogged in the strainers, or the other filters if it got through.

strainer

:thumb:Hi thanks for advice / help, steve.

Thanks for the thread, I will need to do my w124`s tank strainer soon, is the part number A 210 470 05 06?

I will also be changing the in line fuel filter and also the cannister fuel filter as well..
Thanks
Rich

The clue is in the tank level, only did it at 1/4 full, now does it at 3/4 full.

That's most likely to be the tank filter, as already stated previously.

Easy to change in an estate. Look underneth the rear, bottom of tank. :thumb:

I had the same symptoms, started losing power with a 1/4 tank of fuel, then got steadily worse until losing power at 3/4.

Changed the tank filter and it was like fitting a turbo :bannana:

Posted the pictures previously, but i'll post them again.

new filter

My old filter

Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery whilst getting 40MPG+ and zero depriciation. A 190D is the automotive equivalent of Kalms.

Just picture the a faraway Island in the sun, and a voiceover of the Cadbury's Caramel bunny, breathe deeply and you'll get there far faster than you want to!

P.S, We call the Italian tuneup the Bypass Decoke...

Filters.

:bannana:Hi
this is the state of the pre filter, its a black as it looks,
not got the tank filter of yet as guy who,s doing the job need the flexi pipe that screws in the tank filter,as he say,s the one thats fitted will more than likley break when he takes it off, if this filters black dread to think how bad the tank filter is?
also the tank filter on mines under neth the tank, and easy to get to,
