Howdo All, my mate changed the brake pipes on the old girl today. They were pretty corroded at the connectors to the hoses and pretty much 'twisted' off where they had gotten thin. The MoT is due in April and i was originally going to coat them in some waxoyl, but my mate suggested changing them due to the possibility of the MoT tester becoming slightly suspicious and then going over them with a fine tooth comb which would have probably meant a failure.

NS & OS cost £17.20 each + VAT from Mercedes (NS Part No: A123 420 57 28 64, OS Part No: A123 420 64 28 64) even though they are different sizes. There is another smaller pipe in the centre but this was ok and didn't need changing (that pipe is £11.20 + vat). They come straight in the packet and a pipe bending tool is required to shape them. All in all it took about 3 hours including the time to drink the tea (i had no input in changing these and my role today was solely that of tea boy!). The hoses were changed as well and the pipes finally coated in spray grease.

I'd also like to thank Graeme (Grober) & Olly (BlackC55) for their advice :thumb:

I've added a couple of pics:

In addition to the above chaps, it was the rear pipes that were re-newed.

well done for doing that on the ground without use of a lift to get car in the air above your heads.

did the subframe need to be dropped at all ?

which pipe bender did you use and whats the cost of those things ?

I have had the three rear pipes in my possession for about 4 years now with intention to change, but car keeps passing MOT after that initial warning 4 years back.

it will be inevitable though and I will have to get down and dirty at some point.

Perhaps Olly might like to do a demonstration replacement on my car one weekend for all us 124 owners to watch, and charge an entrance fee to recoupe cost - and I get my car done free !!!!!!

Olly - any thoughts !!!!!!!!!!.

I guess his garage would not be big enough for all us 124 owners that would want to attend.

Hi KTH, the job wasn't that bad at all to be honest, in fact the only thing my mate moaned about was the weather and the water that was running onto his face from the drain tubes!

The subframe didn't need to be dropped at all and just a little fettling was required to make the pipes fit. I believe if you want to change the small pipe then the frame may need to be dropped, however, this part doesn't see as much salt and water as the others and mine was in pretty good nick.

The pipe bender was borrowed from my mates work, but i'm pretty sure they are standard and these can be picked up from a motor factors pretty cheaply.

I've attached a picture of the right hand side pipe as well (would have added it to the first post but only allowed a maximum of three pics).
