w124 300te24 running issue

managed to get the car to my place this evening, it died about half a mile away from the house, had to tow it back. same again tho it cut out at 83 degrees, we left it about 10 minutes, the temp dropped to about 80 degrees and when we started it it started fine. got a long list of things to check through, ill prob be asking plenty more questions tomorrow dependant on weather lol.

thank you for all your help so far :)

i've got the exact same issue on my 124 300 at the moment. Keeping a close eye on this thread. As the OP has done, I have also had plugs, leads, etc replaced recently. Dizzy was also repaired (don't think it was replaced).

had a look at it today found out that when cold it was ticking over at 1000rpm, then as it warms up drops to about 800rpm, the temp went up to around 90 degrees and didnt cut out this time, the car was parked facing down hill. drove it around and there were no problems but i would say that the air filter could do with replacing along with the spark plugs, all ht leads (make-beru) seemed fine.

Leads - 0300504102
merc symbol - 0001592842

tested the ht leads nice strong voltage, its currently got ngk plugs in there, tested them and the hotter they got the weaker the spark got

im thinking where it hasnt been used much the dirty air filter, poor spark as temp rises and possibly bad fuel (maybe particalls breaching the filter?) could combine to cause it to stall out and not restart,
its not missing at all but compared to a 300e that i recently drove the engine feels less responsive

Hi Matt

Are those NGK resistor or non resistor type spark plugs????

mazza

hey the plugs are ngk BCP5ES, (non resisor),

Hi Matt

ok! That's good!

The Mercedes HT leads should have resistance built in and therefor you should only use non resistor plugs. it really messes up the spark if both have resistors.

so will get some new plugs, check the earthing for the coil pack and see if the spark is any better, (its been running fine all day todayjust odd its been facing downhill all day and not had a prob) while im at it ill source a new air filter, if i can remove the old one (the rocker cover breather hose goes right through the filter)

is anyone able to decipher the following info?

0628795 5
124091 22

123819 425 210
H 440 341

Its from the front slam panel e.g. 124091 = 300 TE-24,AMG 300 TE 3.4--- its the build plate with the option codes

ok small update, not taken the car any distance for a test drive as yet,

removed bosch dizzy cap the small bronze terminals on the back where black (ive now polished these up) there seems to have been wear to the terminals as there is a small indent in them,

the rotor arm again is a bosch item and again the tip was tarnished, so cleaned this up and polished it,

there doesnt seem any signs of damage to the rotor arm back plate,

sprayed inside the cap with ignition sealer after giving it a good wipe out,
started it up and it was missing terrible, once it got up to temp it started to run smoothly so took it around the estate bout 1 mile and it didnt cut, switched it of and it restarted fine,

the new spark plugs she be fitted wednesday,
what is or has caused the rotor arm and dizzy cap to become tarnished?
is there normally a curve in the dizzy terminal points if not why have these worn down?

are you sure you checked the rotor arm back plate properly... mine had a tiny crack, barely visible but it was causing my car to stumble..

yeah checked it pretty thoroughly, no signs of damage or wear no visible fractures,

If in any doubt replace the rotor and cap. These engines get through them pretty frequently. We had a 300E-24 with a tiny crack in the cap that caused all sorts of trouble.

well took it for a drive today did around 30 miles inc getting stuck in traffic,
didnt miss a beat so i would guess its cured, ran very well,

thankyou to everyone for all the advice : )

* fresh fuel (shell high octane)
* cleaned air filter
* fitted mercedes benz spark plugs (had ngk ones)
* removed dizzy cap and cleaned then polished all points (all where tarnished)
* cleaned and polished rotor arm (tarnished)
* checked air flow sensor
* cleaned connectors to temp sensor and sender
* cleaned ignition lead connections (tarnished)
so the above is what we have done
