W124 aircon gas

I am changing the heater matrix on my friends 1992 mercedes benz 300CE and noticed the evaporator also needs changing.

The old R12 gas is now illegal as far as im aware so
If i change the evaporator will i be able to use the modern type of aircon gas or will i need to change other parts of the system as i have read in other posts.

Whats the easiest way around this ?

Are you sure it's R12? I thought MB changed to R134a for 1991 model year cars.

If you are swapping over from r12 to r134a I'd change as many of the O rings as possible, which is probably all of them if you're changing the evap anyway.

You'll need a new drier tank. Not sure if this is the one for the car your working on, but worth a look.
