w124 Disaster

I now what you are going through Howard... been there and all that.

Best advice is to declare it sorned and get it off the road (round my way the land is privately owned so the car wont need taxing here if your stuck).

The MOT guys are my local garage , not my specialist .... and the problem is, that the tax runs out on Saturday and no-one can do the work before next week ....

They are cheap and good (two words that don't normally go hand in hand) , i guess i'll declare it SORN and leave it to them ...

Only problem might possibly be when i have to take it down to them to actually do the work , technically it will be unMOT'd , untaxed and SORN .... i guess i would have to be unlucky to get busted driving it (literally) a mile down the road ..... i'll use my bike in the meantime, it's getting sunny now !!

I can leave it in my off road parking bays , so no worries there .....

Hopefully it will work out ok , i'll let everyone know how it goes ....

As long as the car is booked into an MOT station and you are taking a direct route, you can drive it without MOT and tax for that purpose.

In the meantime, if you need an emergency vehicle for anything (assuming I dont need it myself at the same time) then drop me a PM.

Have you tried taking it to a different MOT Station, worth a try surely. What about your local Formula 1....... I have found them helpful.

Just an idea.

Howard, sorry to hear of your troubles. Why don't you try Tony at TM Motors as Will suggested his No is 020 8941 4044 . I'm sure he could help you, best of luck.

I have little help to offer you right now, but lemmie give you a tip for the future:

When you next tax your car, just get 6 months then after that continue with 12 months. It'll cost you a couple of extra pounds initially but it will mean that your tax and MOT will be about 6 months apart. Fail the MOT? Relax, you have 6 months before your tax is due.

I've always done this and it's got me out of bother probably no more than once, but it's great for peace of mind.

My previous car was out of sync so the MOT was due a month AFTER the tax was paid, if I had a problem I would have 11 months to sort it out before the paperwork would catch up with me.

EDIT: additionally I should point out that it's illegal to drive around without valid MOT unless you are driving to a scheduled MOT inspection.

Incase you dont know, you get 2weeks until your fine is issued - Called DVLA last year when I couldnt find my insurance papers.

Wicked ....

Thats great news ...

I have managed to get it in on Saturday to be looked at ( they only work till 12 on Saturdays ) ...

They will do the work next week .... it looks worst around the circular mountings on top of the big rubber doughnuts by the back wheels ..... i had a look today ....

I can bike to work , or take the bus (horror) ....

Hope it doesn't turn out too expensive or there'll be a lot of w124 goodies and parts listed in the coming weeks ..... :(

Quick, kick the man while he's down - fancy selling your mirrors for £5? :p :)

Hope it works out Howard - not met you yet, but I get the feeling you don't deserve this! Good luck!

Dont speak like that Howard. The Forum would not be the same without the great white whale:(

Howard don't be silly you can't break it :( , did you see the state of my subrame in the engine swap post

I very nearly gave up on it but was told not to be stupid :D its now at 124Works, I think thats why Ian can't do yours or anything else :o

How friendly are you with the garage? could you pay instalments or something... Good luck, I'm sure it will turn out ok...:)

I would dearly love to do Howard's car as has been previously mentioned, its too good to break. However I have cars all over the place at the moment with another arriving from Scotland Tomorrow  My work priorities are Ash's 4x4, Bolides 300D, Adrians coupe, Sp!kes coupe, this 201 engine swap from Scotland and lastly my coupe for a loom change. There is also in discussion a W126 engine swap for a M119 engine. I must be mad, don't answer that

I have nicked one of Ians pictures here , to illustrate which bits on mine are toast ... you can poke your fingers through them ... :(

Hope you don't mind mate ....

Its the bit circled (but on both sides) .....

You might just get away with lowering the sub frame a little then welding the post mount if that is all that has gone. If its the sub frame itself then you may just need new mountings too. I hope its just the post mount. :o

Sounds like a bit of a common problem I can't believe mine past its MOT in november

EDIT :- Ian there is no real rush for my car, unless you need the suzi back...

Guys
When you get your cars back on the road make sure you go underneath with a can of rust preventative once a year.

It takes ten minutes and costs virtually nothing.

Howard and Ady sorry to hear of the rust but it can definately be fixed..

Thanks Will, luckily I had a spare subframe that was in excellent condition, and its now brand new, I feel for you Howard, I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have the spare. It might be worth trying to find one??

Good luck on Saturday ,I hope it isnt too serious, and is soon fixed. :( :(
