I had the centre section of the exhaust on my '94 E220 W124 Estate replaced last week and the exhaust chaps said the front section might need replacing soon, the bit that has the catalytic converter in it, they guessed at about £500 fitted. I rang GSF today and they have to call me back Monday after checking but reckon less than £200 for part, does this sound accurate, if so what would fitting cost?

Anyone care to give me a vague idea of what I should be paying in total?

Price will vary considerably according to whether the catalytic converter is included or just a plain expansion box. The front pipes can look very tatty because the thin heatshield sleeving corrodes away but the core piping inside will be OK. Make sure its the actual pipes they talking about and not just the shields.
