W124 estate self leveling suspension question

Is there an easy way to check if the suspension is working properly. I attached a trailer to car and it seemed to be at the same height but I couldn't hear a pump working?

The pump is mechanical and runs all the time.

Thanks- so I can assume that if the suspension isn't crashing or sitting low with heavy trailer attached it is working fine?

That's kind of what it does, so, yes.
