does any1 know how to access the front speakers on a w124 coupe??? the 1s which seem to be in dash???

does the dash have to come out or is there some other way?

Pop the grilles off and unscrew them.

thats brill, do you know the size of the speakers by any chance?

12 cm. I can't say I find Rainbow speakers much better, but they are certainly more expensive. Given how old most are, even a new MB set would be likely to deliver much better sound.

I find them better than the originals but they will never be great because of their size and position. We have some speakers in the rear doors and tailgate which help with bass/depth. Charles, I seem to remember you having some serious upgrades to the audio in your car. Did it make a worthwhile difference?

I have Rainbow's front and rear and while they are better than the ones I had in the car when I bought it they still can't cope with any real bass.

One day I shall have a look for teeny sub bass 'things'

Ive got Alpine type S speakers front and rear.

They are direct aftermarket raplacments. Pile of Sh$te!

As im on the the theme of stripping out my motor with my on going stuff to do, Im going to see what i can get on the rear deck. Fronts will be limited but lets see. My mate is an auto leccy who does ICE installs so lets see what he can suggest.

6x9's are out of the question on the rear and certainly no cut outs on the door cards.

My Alpine Type R woofer days are over. Just four good speakers connected to a four channel amp will suffice.

Head unit plays an important role in sound so make sure you have a decent one to start with. Again Alpine has served me best. They have this thing called time correction, and bass focus on each speaker, you can control the output of each speaker - not just your up/down bass and treble level.

Thats why at the moment i can live with my Type S (sh!te) speakers.

I have a Sony Tune-Tray head unit. Probably not the best audio wise but a cheap way to get all your music and permanent handsfree into an old motor: DSX-S300BTX (DSXS300BTX, DSXS300BTX.EUR) : Portable audio : Sony

I'd be interested to see what you do with your speakers Billy

yea its been on the cards for a while, now is the chance to do everything in one go.

a bit iffy as to where i should mount the amp. Dont really want it showing and dont really want to butcher up the metal shelf.

..however the underside of the metal shelf in the boot is well hidden unless you proper get in and have a butchers.

Also have to keep in mind the ease of tuning, if its anything to go by when i was running 3 alpine V12's in the Zetec days i was always fiddling with gains and x-overs.

before i bolt on im going to make sure it sounds right sitting in all four seats!!:D

Bass boxes IMO are no good in a 124 coupe. No where for the pressure to go and ends up shaking the hell out of the panels, sounds diabolicle from outside - too much rattles.

Inside of a 124 boot isnt very good once all the qtr panel trims are removed!

You lot should see the system in the boot of mine that I inherited from the previous owner - I have no idea what half of it does and I am positive I need to be in a car park at a Max Power gathering to get the best out of it.

Shuffs off to corner to be embarrassed:o

No need to be ashamed Matt,I have a sub the size of my boot on my coupe

lets have a pic Matt...

i just have this impression that sound installs in a 124 just doesnt go together.

You are right. This job looks like it was done by Baz and Gaz whilst doing Wizz (showing age there!).

or going to you local halfords and putting on some FOX racing rims on and some Sabelt seabelt covers.

..or getting those gizmo looking air freshners

..and getting those red/blue/green aluminium tax disc holders.

...or buying a sticker that says BARRY!

no offence to any one named Barry on here, but its Dash's fave word.

BARRY BOY job!

I think Blaupunkt and Pioneer also make 2 way speakers that fit the w124 dash location.

My estate has the front door cards for the premium audio package with factory locations for small subs. Combined with full range in the dash and tweeters mounted on the wing mirror cheater trims it sounds on a par with the bose system in the w140.

Not sure if the premium audio was an option on the coupe? if it was, it's worth getting the door cards to make an installation look neat.

I would imagine the coupe is easier to upgrade as the rear shelf can take some decent sized speakers.

I got the W124 specific Rainbow ones and to be honest not that impressed...
They are ok but the Kappa Infinity ones that were in there were loads better... but couldnt find any for sale anywhere.
