w124 front speakers?

lets have a pic Matt...

i just have this impression that sound installs in a 124 just doesnt go together.

I disagree entirely. It has to be done properly though. My departed 320 has the most superb system in it - and if properly soundproofed, mounted rigidly and with premium, but not really expensive stuff, it is extremely good, and that is in an estate - a coupe or saloon should be much better where you can mount a subwoofer using the boot as infinite baffle. I can't wait for it to be out of the old car and put into the new car.

It helps having a W124 expert who happens to be a sound engineer fit it though...

Why did you not take everything back out Charles?

I find them better than the originals but they will never be great because of their size and position. We have some speakers in the rear doors and tailgate which help with bass/depth. Charles, I seem to remember you having some serious upgrades to the audio in your car. Did it make a worthwhile difference?

As above, huge. The more I listened to Rainbows, the more I loathed them - bass brass and drums would come out like a frog belching. A lesser set of speakers flattens the sounds but doesn't unbalance them as badly.

The tweeters are mounted in the sail panels, as they are very directional, the midrange speakers were fitted in the lower rear of the front doors, three layers of heavy soundproofing (amazing what a difference that made to refinement generally) behind, and the speakers mounted behind the door cards (cut out with round stiff wooden mounts) screwed into a rigid metal panel that was screwed tight into the door. With very decent midrange speakers, the subwoofer in the spare wheel centre (in a special moulding) was largely redundant for classical music, but necessary for contemporary stuff (which I largely don't listen to). All in all, with excellent cable, it is a superb set up. Dynaudio speakers and a Genesis / Macrom amp just make for the most transparent sound, so much so that much audio input is shown up as not that great.

It is being taken out now to be refitted to the new car (which is less creaky than the old!), Dash.
