W124 Manual Gearbox Conversion

Hi Mr. D

The Porsche 944 uses a transaxle gearbox, which gives the 944 the famous balance.

As Per Niks post, the BMW E30 M3 uses the same Getrag dog leg box without the silly external rods. The rods bushing can be modified to get a sharper/tighter feel. I believe that the BMW bell housing is slightly different from the Mercedes.

Now that you mention it , that makes sense . Maybe it was some other Porsche of the period ( 928 ? - I am not a Porsche expert ) , it was a Mercedes partsman who told me the box was also used by Porsche ......

I dont think you could get a manual 928 they were all auto's so i was told but then i could be wrong

They must be an animal with a manual box :D:D, you could have some fun in that :bannana:

I've allways liked the thought of the 80's amg manual conversions, 6.0 v8 with a getrag 265 manual gearbox.

oo er missus, with no electronics just a lsd, o what fun could be had

Picture a nautic blue 560sel, drifting round the one way system in a cloud of tyre smoke, then out dragging the porsche 928 away from the traffic lights.:D

They do make them with manual gearbox'es, but how common they are I dont know.

You was right, i will add to this as find out info

Both the manual and auto transmissions are rock solid. The auto unit is really a Mercedes Benz unit. When it comes to modifying for extreme levels of HP/TQ the auto unit can handle slightly more TQ.

The 928 Manual gearbox is made by GETRAG. Hence the G in the type name in the gearbox modeltype.

This goes for all the Porsche models, when you see a G in the gearbox description, its a GETRAG. Getrag also made the racing gearboxes for most Porsches. (The also make gearboxes for Mercedes, and BMW etc..etc..)

Although this seems to deny it it was with reference to older porsche's

Getrag did not make the boxes... G comes from Getriebe - Deutsch for Gearbox

Early boxes have Porsche synchros, which are bad at best and trully horrible in reality. The post 1985 boxes are Porsche made again, but with Borg-Warner synchros, which are actually quite good

The rear locking diffs are ZF.
For the other Porsches, i.e 911, when it was a Porsche gearbox they used the Porsche projectnumbers, 901, 915 etc..etc.. as soon as they changed to the ''much better'' Getrag gearbox for the 911 for the 87 model year, the gearbox got a G ''prefix''. Thought this was for the 928 as well.

The Borg Warner syncros were added for the 85' model year strengthened gearbox, earlier it was the Porsche syncros.

The getrag box from the 16v 190's is the best box for fun, and the weapon of choice for the 3.6, but the gearbox from a 2.6 190e is fine behind a 3.2:thumb:

Hi

I was searching for my bits of data that I collected regarding this subject and finally found them.

ok! There are 2 types of the Getrag 5 speed manual with the dog leg pattern

717.404 all 16v's

717.450 M103 3.2 AMG / M104 24v (w124/w129) units, was informed but haven't been able to confirm for myself that there are a few E36's fitted from factory with this manual box.

A fellow Mercedes enthusiast worked out these ratios (copyright goes to the man)

hope this helps out in some way

It's the 717.450 that I'm using. Be aware that it has the short nose input shaft that needs a dual-mass flywheel for support.

This is it behind a 606.962 diesel.

I didnt know E36's could be fitted with a manual box from the factory.. interesting.

The one i'd be looking for a 717450?

You can use either gearbox behind the m104, but the 717404 from the 16v 190 is the prefered choice.

This is because the 717450 must be used with a daul mass flywheel, which is a big bill waiting to happen. The daul mass flywheel dosent take kindly to enthusiastic driving, and introduces alot of slack into the drivetrain.

The 717404 is used with the older solid flywheel, which will never go wrong no matter how much power is put through it. Gear changes feel nicer and more precise, and there is no slack in the drive train.

There is a way of fitting a solid flywheel with a 717450, but it is a bit of an involved task.

The bellhousing from both the M102 & M103 blocks are the same , you could even fit a newer type 6 speed 'box with some fettling .

Do tell? :) I was thinking of getting the DMF welded up if it gives problems.

You can weld it up, or use one of the conversion kits for the sprinter van. These kits replace the daulmass flywheel with with a solid version, and come with the correct fitting clutch kit.

Lot's of them on ebay: SPRINTER 313CDI SOLID FLYWHEEL CLUTCH CONVERSION KIT | eBay

Perfect for a diesel, but cant be used with a petrol unless you fit the pickup segments, and magnet for the cps to read.
