So I start my diesel up this morning (pretty cold) and it is rough and rather strangled, slip it into D and it stalls. Does it again, then is fine when I apply a decent amount of revs, but still needs throttle at idle to stop it stalling at the end of the road. Thereafter no problems. Just the cold, or some other issue being exposed by the cold? Can't check the battery as my multimeter is buried somewhere in the garage.

Thoughts appreciated as I am taking it down to Olly on Monday for a few little things.

cold getting to the fuel seals which let air in..

We are getting that problem with much newer cars on the forecourt.

I think these have an electronic idle control system, could be playing up? Dose your rev counter work properly?

The rev counter has been knackered for some months, so that diagnostic tool is not there. All is absolutely fine now, I think it was just starting in what had been a very cold spot. On mildly warmer days no problem at all.

Glad all is well. I mention the rev counter because that use's the same sensor as the idle control, to see engine rpm.

Charles, this is bad fuel seals. they are cheap and easy to replace. search "clear pipe" or "orings". common issue on all 606 engines

With this sort of weather, even brand new seals may go hard on a cold day... I wouldnt worry unless you start getting the problem in warmer weather.

Today wasn't so bad, no stalling if less than fully happy. I've had absolutely no problem on milder days so I shall see how things go in future.

Hi
I believe the system may be slightly different from my OM603, but it still has electric idle control? ELR?

My tacho was duff when I bought the 300TD, new flywheel sensor (£20) sorted it, and idle is a lot more reliable with the ELR functioning properly...especially in cold weather...

cheers!

Charles - you mentioned veg oil once.... did you ever put ANY in???????

Not yet, SilverSaloon. A little matter of having a house being rebuilt taking all my time.

just wondered as this will cause airleaks with the seals if you only put in a small amount or big amount, or pur in some and then go back to diesel... basically once veg has gone in you'll most likely need to do the seals whether you stick with veg or not.

if the car is running OK now, then i'd leave it until you next have work done that requires the manifold to come off, and then do the seals then as a matter of course.
