Hi,
I have a 1991 230CE W124 with standard ice, there are no speakers in the rear, looking from the boot it looks like a pretty solid panel under the parcel shelf with no obvious place for any? Is this model setup for rear speakers and can I expect to find wiring in place? I haven't ripped anything out yet for a good look but looking for some pointers?

Cheers.....

Nope not set up for rear speakers.

Edit. Looks like I'm wrong here then. Certainly there wont be any wiring.

Really ? My old 1991 230ce w124 had speakers in pods on the back shelf ?

There should be small circular speaker cutouts at the ends of the rear parcel shelf panel- visible from the boot. [ Certainly on the later cars] Unless the car had speakers before- which it didn't according to your observations, it won't come prewired. The official MB rear speaker size is an odd one and too small by today's standards also, so many people modify the rear parcel shelf to accommodate custom speaker setups. These can benefit from being mounted on a bit of ply or MDF baffle board fixed under the shelf with suitable vents to the cars interior. The large boot makes a good bass resonant cavity for the speaker rears.

There wont be any pre wiring,

Does your rear shelf accomodate rear head rests with oblong speaker grills on either side?

The shelf is metal under there and is pretty solid, you should have cut outs already.

my 89 230ce was not fitted with rear speakers. There was no wiring installed either. However there are two speaker cut outs roughly the same size as the dash speakers on either side by the c pilars. these are visible when the rear parcel shelf is removed. Alternatley right next the the cut outs are two circular plastic reinforcement thingys that support the parcel shelf which will work as a good place to install larger speakers. At least thats how mine was.

No headrests and a dead flat shelf all along, no signs of a grill anywhere !

It looks like I'm going to have to make something up then :( Just don't want to cut / shut anything that will be obviously visible and not standard looking. Deffo looks like a wiring job to do anyway.... thanks for the advice all :)

Thats the same as mine was. As Grober said if you look to each corner of the parcel shelf from the boot you will find the holes though just out board of the boot hinges. You may have to feel for them. taking out the parcel shelf cover from the interior will make them more more visable.

ok, as confirmed by others as well, you will have speaker cut outs in the metal shelf.

As your shelf is plain, this would prove better to fit say somthing like 6x9's speakers and amp them. The boot as grober says will make a good 'box' for bass. Ypu would gain some nice mid range in the car without sounding the MAX POWER geezer.

With shelves with headrests it makes it more tricky to fit better speakers bigger than the cut out in the metal!!

For you, all you'd have to do is cut your shelf for the spekers to fit. You may have to modify the metal original cut outs underneath for any thing bigger than what its catered for though.

A decent Audio installer would do these type of installs with no problem.

since its a flat parcel shelf you have more space between the metal undershelf and the parcel shelf cover beccause there is no recess for the headrests to drop back into.
