W124 E220 Estate 1995
Hello; I have just bought a 1995 E220 W124 Estate. The sunroof just does not work. So I thought about replacing the motor and while I am on the seal. Any ideas on where I should be looking to diagnose issues?

I have read the post and replies to Mattc's thread but can any one tell me where I could get a good quality replacement seal?

I have noticed that there are a few electrical niggled with this car but I am willing to accept and rectify as the I bought her to renovate and she is mechanically mint, I have never been happier than when I am, pottering about in her: Quite pleased tonight as the intermittent wiper started working which did not when I first took ownership a couple of weeks ago:bannana:

Kind regards

Paul

Welcome to the forum Paul. Nice car the E220 Estate.

If you can live with the seal as it is please do. I have just bought a new seal for mine, proper merc one. £65 if I remember rightly - still waiting for the weather to buck up before I attempt to put mine in.

I'm guessing the estate has been stood a while and the intermittent position on the wiper stalk had "furred up" whilst it had been stood. Lets hope your other issues are self fixing to.

We were chatting about 124's earlier today did you spot this thread.

Anything you need just shout.

I actually don't think the seal is as water tight as we all probably hope. A more important thing is to ensure the drain channels are clear.

As above , the seal is not intended to be completely watertight , a certain amount of leakage is expected and the drain channels are there to allow this to drain away without difficulty .

The motor may be perfectly OK .

Firstly , have you checked the fuses ? The ends can corrode away , one of the first things I do with any Merc I buy is to throw away all the old fuses and put in a full set of new ones : they corrode at the ends where they contact their holders and can burn away at the points of contact whilst appearing outwardly OK . Clean up the contacts in the fuse holders when replacing the fuses .

Assuming your motor is running ? Confirm by operating the switch with the nearside boot flap open and ignition on but engine not running - listen very carefully - you should be able to hear the motor running when you operate the switch - or get an assistant to work the switch while you listen next to the motor . If you can't hear it , put a meter onto the motor terminals and see if power is reaching the motor : if 12V are present across the motor , but it does not run , it may be faulty , but it may just be jammed . If no power reaching the motor , then look for a switch or wiring fault .

You can check the roof is not physically jammed by operating the winder manually as shown in the handbook ; also check the motor is engaged by pulling out & pushing in the little wheel next to the motor .

Sometimes the end of the cable can get detached from the sunroof mechanism. First thing as has been said is to see if the motor is running. However don't think that replacing /repairing the motor will solve things as its often a seized /broken sunroof mechanism that caused it to burn out in the first place . However if you use the car daily--- DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO FIDDLE WITH IT IN THE WINTER MONTHS no matter how much you are itching to do so.

Many thanks

Thank you all for replying, and it is apparent from your responses that you are a pretty switched on bunch.

Thanks.

By the way is there anything better than a Haynes manual for reference??

ISBN number or supplier please?

Paul

Got me there Paul. Have not got a Haynes but I do have the book below.

UPC 793486117156
ISBN 13 978 0-958-40261-3 Brooklands Books Mercedes W124 1985 -1955 Owners Workshop Manual.

Being a lazy git I usually ask on here or go see my buddy Ian Walker at 124 Works in Kirkham.

I have some experience of the W124 estate sunroof mechanism having removed and replaced the drive cable and fully cleaned up the drive motor on mine in summer 2010. If you want any pointers I can give you a full explanation. I did used this excellent reference: Sunroof Cable ... help me - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum.
What I would say is that the seal even when new is not perfectly water tight. The inner tray catches the drips and this is drained at the corners down the windscreen pillar tubing. I used braided bicycle brake cable to poke the muck out before flushing with water. When clear, live without a sun roof for a time until the weather is warmer and can be relied upon to be rain free for a while. It is best to do these roof jobs in the sun without time pressure, doing it properly by taking your time will pay off in the long term.
