W124 tyres rubbing

I have a 1995 124, with 7.5"17 amg rims, the tyre size on them are 235 45 17 and they rub on plastic/ arch when going over bumps or with load.what is the proper tyre size i need taking into consideration i am going to be lowering this car shortly. I was thinking 215 45 17. Would this be ok.

I`ve got 215/45s on mine without any problem lowered 40mm

et of the wheel is most important - what is it ?

Merc also recommend installing the wing spacers and the suspension stops, when wider wheels are fitted.
