W124 washer jet problem

Hi Guys,

I've got a problem with the front washer jet on the driver's side. Washer fluid only comes out of the hole on the left. (This happened one day this week when it was -X'C outside)

I thought it might be frozen but today everything thawed out nicely and it still wouldn't come out. I thought it was probably blocked so tried pushing a fine bit of fishing line down the hole to try and clean it out. That didn't work either ... :(

I lifted up the bonnet and found the service cap underneath, but didn't go any further as it was getting dark and couldn't see what was going on.

Does the jet have 2 feeds for each nozzle jet or is it a single connection and the fluid is split within the unit? I could see some wires in there as well. I guess these are for heating it up...?

I'd like to take it out and give it a good clean, but I'm unsure how it comes apart. If anyone has a service diagram of how these come apart I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Blondebier

There are 2 options I'd use.

1) Take the hose off the bottle, where it comes out, and attach high pressure air to it (Tyre pump will work!) and blow it clear that way.

2) Easier still - if you're in the medical profession, or have access to needle and syringe, then a green needle, with a 50 ml syringe of air will clear it in a jiffy (This is how I did mine!) Insert needle in hole, fill syringe with air and push!

Good Luck!

Thanks Timster. I've gone down the blocked route, I think it might be something else though...

Is there fluid coming out anywhere else when you operate the washers (check under the car)? If the fluid froze it may have pushed a joint/union apart.

If you want to remove the jet assembly it will easily push out from under the bonnet. Be careful though, it may be a bit brittle if it's old.

Be sure to disconnect the wiring too.

Thanks for the replies.

I thought it had sorted itself out as it just started to work again without any further help from me.

But driving in to the office today one of the jets on the passenger side didn't work. I think whatever was blocking the driver's side has now worked it's way over to the other side...

Is it possible to remove the jet from above or does it need help from underneath. It's pretty dark in there and I cannot see how it clips on.

As Frank warned - I don't want to force it and break the clips that hold it in place if there is a knack to removing it.

If anyone has done this before I would appreciate any pearls of wisdom.

Cheers,

These Jets are heated and they eventually fur up like a kettle element and this dislodges and blocks the holes intermitantly. I just replaced them with new ones - not expensive, and easy to do.......

Ciao.
