W124 Wont start after changing battery

Hiya Help! ( Reposted as not sure which section to upload to )

W124 E220 1993

Had the car for 3 years has not missed a beat. Fitted replacement battery today kept leads connected to trickle charger to keep radio code.

Car wont start all lights on ignition light up but key turns but as if I was trying to start it in gear no response also all the indicators are flashing and there is a small red light lit up near the light switch

I have never had an alarm fob and have always just used the key to open the doors , start the car etc

Any ideas have I triggered some sort of immobiliser if so how do I reset it

Thanks

Anything in the handbook relating to any resets following a battery change ?

'Does sound a lot like an alarm system. The systems of that period tend to cut off the power supply to the starter motor. Is there a small round metal keyhole somewhere around the steering wheel area in the car? The alarm systems tended to have a small key to override them in these circumstances.

Does sound like the immobiliser is on.

Disconnect the battery, just the earth will do, key to position one in ignition and reconnect battery. That was the procedure on my W124.

EDIT: actually, that allowed my fob to activate/deactiavte alarm/immobiliser but car would start even if I forgot and reconnected battery without key in pos 1 so this may not work for you but maybe worth a try.

I think that was when the alarms were fitted at the dealer but the OP seems to have an aftermarket one since it's got the little flashing light

re car wont start

Thanks for all the replies, left the battery disconnected overnight now seems ok
