Hi I have just bought a 1998 w140 coupe CL 420.....I am just wondering about wheel size. The car came with 18 inch alloys, though I don't think they are period original. I think they may be a more modern mercedes design. My big question is what size wheels should be on the car. Was the cardesigned by merecedes to take 18 inch alloys. Were 18inch alloys a option for them in 1998 or has someone over sized the wheels should there be 17inch or 16inch on the car

The 1998's used 18's.

The standard wheels on the 1992-1996 were smaller and the ride was a lot smoother.

The ride on my 1996 S500 coupe was the smoothest and quietest of any car that I have ever owned (which includes various incarnations of the W140 sedan and coupe and three generations of Lexus LS's)

Which CL was it that you bought? There have been a few CL420's kicking around for a while now.
