Hi all,
Hoping for a bit of help. I've got an absolute lemon of a W163 that has spent it's entire time in my possession giving me a headache. So much so, I gave up on it for a while and laid it up for 2 years. The exact chain of events that led up to this is too long to post here and reads as a 'what's what' of W163 issues. However I need to start using it again and cleaned it up enough to get it through an mot today. I got advisories for inner steering rack joints play.
On the way home I noticed a pretty horrible knocking at low speeds when I roll off the throttle. Started from the passenger footwell but seems to be getting worse and I can actually feel it through the steering wheel now. Noise is consistent with road speed and goes away if I accelerate or brake to shift weight forward or back. Car behaviour is not great. It wanders and feels very loose.
Could anyone suggest where to start please? Maybe CVs, diff, front prop or could the loose rack joints create these symptoms. As always, help is greatly appreciated.
