W164 ML320 CDI Sport

I have a 2005 320 SE, with 20,000 miles, I chose this over the sport version, as I prefered the wood trim inside, and I wasnt to keen on 19" wheels.

Ive had the ML for about ten months and It has lived up to expectations. Ive had no problems.

The ride is good, and the 320 diesel engine is excellent. I think the 7 speed gearbox on mine needs a software update, as slowing down at low speeds, the gearbox is jerky.

I average 27.8 mpg, and with the aircon off on a run Ive had over 36 mpg.

As a everyday car, ive enjoyed owning it.

Thanks Wobbly - are there any options you have/didnt get that I should keep a particular eye out for?

I quite fancy getting the Brabus chip too, as I hear it adds a sizeable lump of torque. Who knows!

Thanks for the info as to consumption.

I got one for my wife a month ago and she really likes it!
The engine is great without the upgrade chip, and big grin quick with one.
I have had to have the COMAND replaced under warranty but no other issues.
Airmatic is fantastic, but I wish I had the memory package. Good for the seats, but even better to dip the mirrors for reversing.
Best mpg so far is 34 but comuting into the city gives about 30.
It cost well over £100 to fill up....

Hi SCR,

Had my ML320CDi Sport since Jan 2006 and travelled 24,000 miles @ 27.8 mpg....air/con, on or off, doesn't seem to affect mpg?

Opted for air suspension but with 19" wheels you feel bumps on 'rough' roads....smooth on M-ways etc....probably better with 17" wheels? Sport air setting is noticibly harder than comfort but usually leave in auto (except for occasional sweeping bend etc. ;)

Tyres (Michelin) lasted 17,000 miles else no problems.

Alcantara seats have worn very well... I was a bit worried about their durability but no problems there....also don't need heat and don't 'slide' about etc.

I also suffer from the occasional 'jerk' @ low speeds although there are meant to be software upgrades etc.

Whilst it's not a sports car in accelerates well on the move and the 5mph ± increment cruise control function is really handy especially for 50 to 70 and 70 to 50 mph speed limit changes i.e. 4 up or 4 down presses of lever.

Cheers,

At the time when the ML (W164) was released it was described as the best of the SUV's. So better than last gen X5, Q&, Porka Cayenne etc. In other words a pretty damn good car.

I think its a looker too :D

Some cheap petrol ones on piston heads you could add gas...

ML500 with LPG cool :)

Get more to the gallon than a 320Cdi and a v8 to boot.

Like the new shape ML, I like the edition 10 model that I guess is quite rare / too new second hand yet?

I have a Sept 2006 320 cdi sport with 30k.

Overall the car is the best I have owned, not as fast as some, not as comfy as others but overall it is such a complete car.
I have the memory seats, comand all as listed in my sig but if I were to get another then air-matic would be a serious option. I had it on the W211 and from what I have read it is worth having although in saying that everyone who gets in the car always compliments the ride quality.
Overall a superb car.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

the one I am looking at does have the alcantara seats and am releived to hear they wear ok. That said, i'd prefer full leather...

Not sure it has Airmatic...will find out.

Mactech - does the Brabus chip make a really noticeable difference at 0-60 speeds or only higher up the curve?

Thats another reason I chose the SE, as it has full leather interior.

One thing I would have liked, was parking sensors, I know I can get them retrofitted, which I will get around too one day.

Mine dosnt have Airmatic, but the ride is still very good, just the other day, I drove across a field at about 25mph, and the ride was ok.

Anyone know if full leather is an option on the Sport? Prefer the look of it to the Leather/Alcantara, although my wife likes the Leather/Alcantara so it probably doesn't matter :D

Unfortunately, Sport does not give you the option of leather. I guess only if you buy the Designo package.

The throttle response is the biggest change. The extra grunt starts low down and continues. The 0-60 is improved and my wife comments that it " jumps out better at roundabouts"
Who am I to argue!:D

Lol! Indeed.

I will seriously consider it....

the one I am looking at is with Merceds Tonbridge and has 19inch AMG wheels on it. Black.

But I am still considering others if anyone thinks there are options?

I have traded three cars to Mercedes direct and they have always given good prices. The best bit is the sticker price on their cars is only the starting point.I paid £3k less than the advertised price for the ML and still got a good p/x price.:D That make them attractive. Look out for one with the spec you want and wait for the end of the month....or better still the quarter;)

Whats the difference between Direct Mercedes and the approved used car?

Some of those ML classes do look tempting :D
