Hi,
I have a 1997(P) c-class TD Estate and been having running problems recently. She starts no problem, runs a couple of minutes then stutters and dies. The filters were changed, one way valve replaced but on taking a sample from fuel lines, black lumps were noticed. Is this signs of the pump breaking up or the fuel tank breaking up?
Thanks for your interest and advice.
John

Problem has beeen detected as fuel pump knackered. Can any member please advise of new parts suppliers or reconditioned parts suppliers. Mercedes agent is quoting £607 plus vat for a new pump. Many thanks. John.

I'd seriously double-check the fuel lines, o-rings before going to the expense of replacing the pump.

Drawing air or seal break up?

Hi,
Thanks for tip. Which fuel lines and which o rings do you suggest checking? The fuel feed to the filter has been disconnected and this is where the foreign matter has shown so it appears that the fault is between the tank and filter. Can't get the drain plugs loosened to flush the tank out. Really frustrating.

All the clear pipes you can see that go around the filter. Replace all the orings, or full clear pipes with new ones.

replace the main screw on filter, the pre-filter and tank strainer.

i'd be surprised if it was the pump.

Sounds like the fuel is leaking/returning to the tank and therefore it starts with whats in the filter and then dies because of starvation.

another way to check would be to pull the in/out fuel lines (iether the main rubber one in the engine bay that goes on the metal pipes back to tank, or even better 2 of the clear plastic fuel lines into a bottle of diesel and run it from there - if it doesnt die then you're making progress.

Engine cutting out

Hi,
Thanks for advice.
According to the manual the strainer can be checked after removing the tank. Is this correct or is there another method of checking it? John
