Hi Guys

Just bought my dad's C200, which has been completely faultless for him for years and years. As soon as I get my hands on it, it starts playing up

Basically, I had to disconnect the battery to fit a new headunit, and upon finishing and going for a drive, I find the car is completely gutless.

If you go full throttle it is sluggish from low revs, and struggles past 4krpm, sounding like its not having a very nice time and taking ages to reach the redline :(

The only time it seems to behave normally is 1-3.5k rpm on gentle throttle, around 1/4 opening.

Anyone shed some light? Is it electronics related or a coincidence e.g. blocked/collapsed CAT?

Regards

Jon

Cheers, any way I can test? How much am I looking at?

Also as an aside, is my 1999 C200 OBD2 compliant? Thinking I might invest in a fault code reader.

Cheers

Jon

You can test it by disconnecting it. Release the clip and pull the connector out. The ECU will then use its built in default map and ignore the information from the air mass sensor. When your car runs OK with it disconnected you have found the fault.

Borrowed the MAS from my friend's C180 and it did indeed cure the problem. Thanks for the diagnosis, saved me £60 having it put on STAR.

£300 for a Bosch MAS made me cringe a little though! Never mind.

You should have asked. I could have got uou one for nearly half that.

Haven't picked it up yet, where should I buy from?

Either ask Olly (BlackC55 ^^) or go to Euro Car Parts and get it from there. Make sure it a Bosch one.

I think GSF will only sell the Pierburg inserts. Euro like to sell the whole unit complete, which costs more.

A member on here 'franey' can supply Pierburg inserts also, may be worth a try.

Buying the whole maf is a real con, where all you really need and the only fuctional component in the whole unit is the insert.
