Recently purchased a 2000 W202 CD220. Drived lovely on the test drive and still does to a degree. We have noticed on last 3 journeys the car going into "limp mode", this only happens after 40 miles or so. All power disappears, no turbo kick in, it wont go over 2.5 - 3k. I then pull over turn the ignition off, open the driver door then restart and its fine again for 5-10 miles then its happens all over again.
I'm starting to regret the purchase as it sounds expensive, luckily it was bought from a local garage who said they'd take a look at it, although I'm not to confident there'll find the problem. Can anyone offer any advice?

have your local garage pluged it into any diagnostic mechine?
im sure if its been into limp mode then there will be a code(s) or pending code(s)
did you get any warranty?

Take it back mate....it could be a money pit...the longer you leave it, the harder it will be for you to go back...and you should not even have to think about fixing it.

I have no idea what the problem could be but for sure within a week of purchase if you have major problems like this then you have rights under the sale of goods act.
Take it back to the dealer and give them notice that you reject the car unless they sort out out the problem at their cost and give them a time limit of say 10 days.

Crikey - out with the big guns right from the start!

If the garage that sold the car are offering to fix it, I don't see what the problem is.

Faults can happen at any time - it's how they're dealt with that matters :)

Perhaps wait until the garage have had an opportunity to look at this fault first before making any rash decisions...

+1
give the garage a chance to sort the car out .
It would be pointless for a dealer to sell a car none to be a dud then offer to fix this car .

It could be just as simple as a faulty air mass sensor.

As Paul's post says "now regretting his choice" in my experience that will never change...lets suppose the garage he bought it from fixes it, I am guessing the garage is not an MB garage, anyway they fix it...every time the car gets a fault, and Paul puts his hand in his pocket...he will regret it.

Best buy within warranty then?

The trouble is, like most warranties, they are not worth the paper they are written on...

Warranties are by the by - when purchasing from a trader you get a lot of protection from the sales of goods act. Apart from wear and tear for its age - the car has to be free from faults..

I think you are being unnecessarily pessimistic. Things go wrong. As has been said it may only be a MAF...less that £60 .

Yes, and the best bit about the sale of goods act is...you can take it back and get a refund.

Most dealers give 3 months as standard...I just bought a second hand BMW with 12 months AA warranty, the warranty covers quite a lot...it also does not cover quite a lot...the thing is, does Paul want his new car going back and forth whilst they repair/try to repair it?

If you buy a 2000 w202, things will go wrong. So what? Get them fixed and enjoy the car. Get it on a Star and see what the problem is...i'll bet it simple etc.

You might want to consider taking it to a local, trusted indie specialist for an evaluation (at your own cost of course). They'll tell you what the problem most likely is (can't always tell till it's fixed!) and also if the car has any issues that should prompt you to return it asap! They'll give you an independant opinion of the car.
