Hello All,

I have a 1998 C230 Kompressor that has now covered 151,000.

Just had it serviced but there has been and still are two noises coming from the engine:

one is a quiet sounding but fast chuck chuck chuck!
second is a sound of maybe the timing being out?

I mentioned it to the guys at the garage and they said it sounded and ran like it should and that the guy that took it for the road test had nothing but a grin on his face when he returned, BUT its a noise that wasnt there before and now I can hear it.

Dont know if its just me being OTT or if there is something I can do to get rid of the noises or at least have them diagnosed, it seems like im the only one that can hear and feel them.

If anyone has come across anything like this or knows of anything I can do to resolve the noises id be greatful.

That fast chuck chuck sound you mention, is it more of a fast ticking sound? If it is its the purge regeneration valve and thats normal. You will find it next to the abs unit.

Hi,
Was the noise there before the service? I had the belt changed on mine and when i got it back the engine sounded different.

I think the noise was present before the service but even feignter than it is now, if anything it has got louder, ive listened again and its more or a chuck chuck chuck sound rather than a ticking sound.

I know it may be nothing but its really starting to bother me and it seems like the only noise I can hear (or at least my ears are focusing in on it!).

Is there any way I can get it looked at in a meaningful way, instead of just being told it sounds fine?

Best Regards

Khalid

Yes a known problem it is. I was going to mention that, but on a cold engine usually this causes a loud ticking sound as well if it is cracked. But as the engine warms the sound the cracked manifold may be making usually disappears as the metal expands after getting hot.

But depends on how bad the crack is. Would the car not run as well as normal with a cracked manifold?

Shude's ex 230K ran very well with a cracked manifold. It was only a thought.

Take a video of it with your phone so people can hear the noise, then post it on here :)
