W202 C240
Hi Guys,

I filled up with a full tank of fuel last week, and reset the trip meter. I used 3/4 of a tank already and I've only covered 211 miles! (See photo below) It has all been stop/start town driving with no journey being longer than 7 miles. I've been driving normally too, haven't been thrashing it. (Not that I normally do)

Is this pretty normal? Or is something causing my engine to drink fuel?

What sort of MPG are you guys getting in your W202 C240's?

Thanks in advance!

Fairly normal. My W202 240 did about 18mpg in town

yours works out about 19.7 based on a 65 litre tank off the top of my head. maybe it was 62. im not far off

wow thats thirsty... ive got a C200 and when it gets to where urs is, its done about 280 ish miles... thats combined and takin it ez...... most of the time

I worked mine out a year or so to be around 24-25
mpg after a mix of town and motorway driving, remember your driving style effects it the most! :)

The key here is that you haven't done more than 7 miles at a time, the smooth V6 gets thirsty when your in consistent stop start traffic, stretch it's legs on a long trip and you'll see much better results.

Its pretty awful for a 2.4 V6 with 170bhp. Its not that quick. Sure is thirsty around town!

On long motorway runs from Leicester to Preston I get about 325 miles.

Do you find it sluggish? Or are you comparing it to a V8 etc? Until I had a new MAS fitted the performance of mine wasn't anything to write home about, afterwards however it's a new car.

My C240 does 100 miles a day, every day (yes, I know i should buy a diesel). National speed limit cruising gets me about 380 - 390 miles to a tank, maybe a bit more if I dare.

Fuel economy on these falls through the floor with town driving, the C240s are motorway cruisers.

I will say that the fuel gauge is utter rubbish though, I read about 250 miles at the 1/2 way mark. When the light comes on, i've got roughly 25ish miles left at 70 miles an hour.

Only 25? I've managed 49 after the light came on :D at motorway speeds, brown stains included

It can be sluggish at times yes. No no, not comparing it to a V8. Just saying on paper it sounds good, but actually its not that quick? Am I making sense?

MAS? What is this? Sounds good.....please explain.....:)

Do a search on the forum, it's the Mass Airflow Sensor, normally start to go once you get to 80k+ cause sluggish performance, then misfires

mine was £160 if I remember correctly, completely transformed the car into a rocket (not by V8 standards of course) but compared to before it was fitted the difference was very noticable

Get the 250 TD! I get around town closer to 300 miles on three quarter tanks worth of satans fuel. On a run I've had 550 miles on one tank. That included a trip to Great Yarmouth from Hampshire and half a weeks town driving.

I don't think the M112 engine is particularly economical even on a long run. I don't think I've ever seen the right side of 30mpg in my C280.

Also bear in mind the time of year, fuel economy goes down when it's colder, and how much of your driving time is spent just bringing the car up to temperature. With lots of short runs this will also have an effect.

C240 W202 Fuel

I just had this car for a week, first tank of petrol has taken me 350 miles before warning light came on....2.4 V6 Auto, not bad I thought, however 240 miles was on motorway at night using cruise between 60-70, and long stretches of 50mph because of workmens cones and no workmen!!!!!
This is approx 29mpg

Lets see what I get when I fill up today.....

PS....I am sure the car is overdue by 9500 miles for servicing....122k on the clock.

My c230k did 255 until the light came on but that has been no real long journey, to'ing and fro'ing. Just filled it up again today so reset the clock. Challengin myself to beat the mileage each time :)

Best - 35mpg (~410 miles)
Worst - 23mpg

I find that driving style doesn't really affect mpg (I tried hypermiling / driving slow for a tank and it was a waste of time, quite literally!) but the difference between town and motorway makes a big difference.

Even at 'motorway cruising speeds' it'll do 30mpg on a long run.

Car is a 1998 with 136k.

Filled car up again, 245 miles covered, another £71 to fill up (56.39 Litres)....works out to 20.5 mpg ! :o
