The spare fob for my c36 will lock and unlock the doors but will not start the car, when trying to the red and green lights continuously flash. Other fob is perfect. Any suggestions appreciated. Oh yes fob has new batteries.

The batteries play no part in the key being recognised. The key has a small coil that is energised when in the ignition and this allows the transponder in the key to communicate with the ignition switch and allow the car to start, the coils can become detached or damaged so repair may be possible.

Thank you. Do I need to go to mercedes to get this done?

I doubt they would offer this service but would offer you a replacement key for a suitable fee!:D

Try asking any local electronic repair shops to see if they can have a look.

I have been told that my key does not have a coil. It is a single button type. Has been suggested I disconnect the battery, however I am concerned as to what affect it may have on the good key.

The key has a separate circuit to allow it to be recognized and disable the immobilizer, this is powered by induction when the key is placed in the ignition switch.

Usually there is a coil in the key that allows a small voltage to be induced, if the person that told you otherwise has specific knowledge perhaps they can suggest a solution?

Disconnecting you car battery would probably have no positive benefit but I cannot see it having any negative result.

Inside your remote there may be a chip located below the Red lens as illustrated in picture below, this chip can be lost if it is dropped when someone opens the remote without knowing of its existence.

If the chip isn’t glued into the position as in picture below then it can’t interact with the transponder coil around the ignition and so the car won’t start.
Example of a transponder on another car… Bert Rowe's-A-class info. Hazard warning, car keys, re-synchronizing remote keys, Central locking.

If you open the remote be very careful of anything loose dropping out.

Thank you for all of that information.if the chip is missing does that mean a new system/program or what? Simon

It might not be missing, it might have worked loose from its spot and still inside the fob, I’m not absolutely sure your car has this chip, depends a lot on when your car was made, I think it might be an early 1996.

Have you known this key to be able to start the car in the past?

Put your VIN in here and click ok… Êàòàëîã çàï÷àñòåé Mercedes, ïîäáîð àâòîçàï÷àñòåé äëÿ Ìåðñåäåñ ïî àâòîêàòàëîãó.
That site will tell you what the delivery date of your car is.

Your VIN is located bottom outside of windscreen passenger side.
