W202 puddle lights

Hi can you tell me when the puddle lights in the front doors come on ie everytime the door is opened or do the side lights have to be on or the interior courtesy has to be switched on to operate when the doors are open.

I believe (could be wrong) they come one whenever door is opened. Been a while since I had a w202 though!
