MERCEDES C 270CDI
BOUGHT MY 04/5 270 CDI LAST AUGUST, RETIREMENT PRESENT FROM ME TO ME.
42K, **********E SPORT MODEL.
SO FAR: £300 2 NEW TRYES, £190 OIL CHANGE SERVICE, £446 NEW ESI, (HALF PAID BY SELLING DEALER - HE WOULD HAVE INSTALLED S/H PARTS...), AND £41 FOR REPLACED CORRODED WIRE TO COOLING FAN.
IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE I CAN REPLACE THE OEM 17" ALLOYS WITH 16" DUE TO THE HUGE BRAKE DRILLED DISC SET-UP ON FRONT WHEELS. THE LARGER ALLOYS COMPROMISE RIDE COMFORT - DISAPPOINTING.
THE FOOT OPERATED HANDBRAKE IS ALSO NOT RELEASING, DESPITE A 'FIX' BY LOCAL GARAGE. SO BACK TO MERC SPECIALIST ON MONDAY.
NOW
I AM GOING TO ATTEMPT TO INSTALL MYSELF, AN AUX IN , INTO THE FACIA OF THE AUDIO 20 SET-UP , THEN A CONNECTION TO A BRODIT CLIP AND MP3 CHARGING CRADLE. THE EXCELLENT ADVICE I FOUND IN ARCHIVES WILL ASSIST WITH ALL BUT THE FACIA DRILLING. I AM NOT EVEN REMOTELY AN ENGINEER, BUT ELECTRONICS DONT SCARE ME, (FAMOUS LAST WORDS), SO I WILL POST PICTURES OF THE FINISHED JOB, AND ANY OTHERS I FEEL MIGHT BE USEFUL.
I LOVE THE CAR, BUT IT SEEMS FRAGILE WHEN JUDGED AGAINST A NEW MODEL CITROEN C5 I SWAPPED IT IN FOR. I SUSPECT THE MERC HAS NOT BEEN WELL LOOKED AFTER, (JUST 2000K IN LAST TWO YEARS OF LIFE), BUT THE 270 IS A FAR MORE SATISFYING CAR.

THE CAR HAS HAD A MILD FACELIFT, WITH INSTALLATION OF CHROME BOOT STRIP AND THIN BOOT SPOILER, MOULDED BOOT MAT AND NEW TOP CARPETS. I JUJST WISH I COULD CHANGE THOSE LOVELY LOOKING BUT HARSH RIDE 17" ALLOYS - ANY SUGGESTIONS?
BEST TO ALL - ARTHUR.

Re. the ride, is it possible to buy a tyre with a thicker sidewall? This should soften the ride slightly.

Not without throwing out the speedo.

If the ride bothers you that much buy some springs from an ellegence.

My ellegence has a very acceptable ride on 18 inch wheels.

I originally wanted an 'Elegance' 207 , but the low mileage of mine was a clincher. the ride is NOT that bad, and on Motorways the car is more than comfortable. Having, however, been driven in an Elegance model prior to purchase , the ride is more cossetting, and I would happily sacrifice the added roadholding of the stiffer set-up on my Avant Garde.
The idea of using springs from an Elegance seems a good one, I will investigate and consider your suggestion. -Thanks.

Just received message that elegance springs are not suitable for sports chassis....

Surely at most you would require the shocks as well.

The chassis is identical. It just has a different suspension set up.
