The brake pedal seems to travel before the brakes bite they work fine and there does not seem to be any air in the system as pumping the pedal does not make it any harder.

I have never owned a merc before so am unsure if this is normal for this car or not.

If anyone has any ideas than that would be great.

Thank you

Does it feel spongy or just excessive travel? How far do you have to depress it?

Both symptoms could be caused by air in the system, so worth bleeding I think.
Also check the condition of the flexible rubber hoses and make sure the master cylinder securing nuts are tight.

Other causes could be a faulty master cylinder or servo.

Thanks for the reply I would say that the pedal does feel a bit spongy, it is certainly not firm, so i will try and bleed the brakes and see if that does make any difference.
