Have you tried resetting it, by disconnecting the battery for an hour?

Thank you! From the bottom of my heart! You just saved me £750. Unhooked battery, left for one hour, hooked up battery = problem solved.
Had a pleasant word with dealer and he removed the "fault record" for nothing.
Just wish I hadn't been so quick to hire another car.

I tried it 4 times, first time was a touch wood moment. then the other 3 in hope and desperation

[SORTED] One MB has been sorted over the course of nearly 2 weeks (MINE!) Got it back with the ignition switch replaced setting me back exactly £505.41p. Bargain ay?! Lol, thanks to everybody that helped during this post to help me determine the best plan of action. I'm just so glad to be back in it and out of the wretched company punto i've had to put up with. Its a joy to drive an MB. I will get some snaps together and post up my car some time soon.

Spoke too soon!!!

Really had myself fooled for a while; thought I had saved myself £750. No way! Went out yesterday morning and the damn thing wouldn't start due to same problem. Tried unhooking battery, but no good. Merc' man is collecting it tomorrow.
One point I noticed was that my problem started when I tried to open a frozen-up door and ended up having to use the manual key to get in. Same thing yesterday. Wondered if this may cause the malfunction?
