Hi All,

Its possible Im going to need a new gearbox as there is no drive at all in any of the settings and the gearbox has shown various codes from a diagnostic scan.

So does anyone know which model gearbox is fitted to this model? is there like a gearbox code that I'll need to identify a replacement?

Thanks in Advance.

Your Vin number will include a gearbox code. From memory the first three numbers are engine then its gearbox - poss 722 or something of that sort.

There is a thread on how to understand VINs I think.

Out of interest - how do you know you need a new gearbox? Could it be something simple?

Good luck

Thanks for that, Ill have a look when I get home, but is there a certain type/model that is fitted to every 270 cdi?

Forgot to mention that mine is an auto, so can I take the gearbox from any w203 c270 cdi auto an it should fit mine?

also, Im aware that the 270 cdi engine is used on other models also, would gearboxes form them fit into a c-class?

Sorry bout all the Q's! I know more bout VW/Audi/BMW and this is my first Merc so im still learning!

Well the problems from the gearbox are many! Firstly, it doesnt engage in any gear, a merc specialist had a look at the fault codes and there were quite a few (I think approx 20), so im just preparing myself for the worst case scenario! They are still looking further into the problem, so it could be something smaller but Ill update when I know more.

So far all they've mentioned is that theres no drive in any of the gears, and that theres some sort of slipping thats been occuring in some of the gears, similar to what 'clutch slip' would feel like on a manual motor so im told.

Ive had a read around the forums and it seems the electronic plate in the gearbox is pretty common, but with that at least you still have some drive in a gear, so this problem sounds worse than that!

Sounds like you need an automatic transmission specialist rather than an MB indie. I've seen a few posts here and on t'other side where the indie referred the problem to an auto specialist rather than trying to handle it himself!
There used to be a Russian website that decoded your VIN number and gave you a lisiting of all the options fitted - but I've got a horrible feeling it went down a while back. Try a search on here and t'other side for VIN Decoder.

That famous Russian site in more operational... But there is another one through which you can trace your gearbox...

Ok though I'd update as the problem is fixed now.

Firstly no new gearbox needed wahay!

The gearbox oil level was too low which was why there was no drive in any of the gears.
and the rest of the fault codes were due to oil leakage into an electronic plug somewhere. That got changed and all problems solved :D

Kudos to Osbournes merc specialist in Maidenhead for sorting this. Kept me well informed and didnt charge me an arm and a leg either. Decent garage and friendly chaps.

Just need to change the front ARB links/bushes and a left indicator and its sorted :D
