Hello

I've been away from Mercs for a while, but now have about £5500 to spend (absolute max, would prefre lower) on one of the above. The thing is I really need at least 40 mpg... but also dont want it to be too slow!

My present v70 D5 gives 42 mpg (manual) for me on my commute and feels pretty grunty (9.8s 0-60).

What do you think is the best compromise???

Cheers all :thumb:

Buy the 270 CDi; 180bhp and 40mpg+ and a very robust engine.

Go for a manual gearbox and you should achieve even better mpg figures.

A few questions!
Does he manual box suit mercs well??
Would the 320CDI get anywhere near 40 mpg??

cheers!

I've got a manual C220. On the motorway its not a problem I can put it in 6th and leave it there for 500 miles to and from work.

When I take it for a blast its nice to have a manual.

About town its a pain in the a**e, not so much in Essex but in Fife its a little more hilly and with no hand brake you have to be quick with your foot work.

would I buy another manual Mercedes...............I don't think I would.

Mine is a manual W204 which came with 'hill start assist' - a useful gadget that automatically holds the car for a second on releasing the footbrake giving you plenty of time to let in the clutch. A lot of folks dis the manual boxes on Mercedes but I have found mine to be responsive and well suited to the car - not quite a BMW 3 series but good enough for me.

Its the lack of handbrake I have a problem with, the manual box is great and is still tight after 180k, original clutch too I think. 1st gear is a little short though and it doesn't like pulling away in second.
