W203 corroded brake pipes

I've just been quoted £500 + vat by my main dealer to replaced the corroded brake pipes to prevent a MOT failure, is this a good price, The pipes do need doing as they have been mentioned on the MOT advisory sheet now for 3 years by a indi garage, before my main service at the main dealer.
why don't Mercedes make the brake pipes out of stainless steel or some thing simular ?
 
If you have had the MOT done at the indie........ get the brake pipes done there, will be a damn site cheaper.
 
The best material for brake pipes is 90/10 copper-nickel.
Volvo have fitted it as original equipment for many years.
It has excellent salt-water corrosion resistance and will usually last the life of the vehicle.
It's also easy to bend and flare ... Unlike stainless steel.
 
Ever thought of fitting goodridge braided hoses (Olly PCS Service) fitted mine, and they have been excellent also lot cheaper than £500.00.

Hoses are different to pipes - they are used between the callipers and the main pipe work where movement occurs. The OP is talking about pipes which, years ago, had to be replaced a lot more often on cars made in the 70's and 80's!!
 
The pipes themselves cost next to nothing - it is only labour that bumps up the price .

If you can DIY , you can save a fortune .
 
You can buy a roll of copper-nickel brake pipe from most motor factors.

Use copper-nickel.
It's far superior to copper, which is often sold.

You can buy a brake pipe flaring tool.
You only need to do one serious job with it and it will pay for itself.

Then, with a bit of know-how and a lot of care and attention to cleanliness, you can do the job yourself.
