Hi all

My C180Estate has an irritating rattle on the back end as its driving along, it sounds like there is something loose in the back, apparently its been checked out at the dealers to no avail.

I remember reading something on here about it but cant remember exactly what!

Parking brake cable on the prop or exhaust heat shield come loose. CAT breaking up? Parking brake assembly loose...

Nothing obvious on checking

A number of S203 drivers have traced a rattle to the rear number plate. Give it a gentle thump to see if you can replicate it.
Or is there something in the rear storage compartments? Particularly the near side where the toolkit is kept.

just found mine with a broken rear spring, the broken off bit rattles around in the cup. hasnt affected the drive or height noticeably.
I also have a interior rattle which has started and cant find it I might just strip the back end down one afternoon the refit to see if it solves it.

my w202 rattled for ages and drove me utterly mad, i took everything out of the boot and spare wheel and so on and it still rattled then i thought maybe if i adjust the little rubber bungs that are either side ( where the rear door come to rest on when closed ) would this help... hey presto once i had wound them out a little so the back door rested on these first then rattle went away.... :)

Also check that the rear tailgate latch is securing the tailgate snugly. It should have two black plastic guides on either side of the lower latch (the bit that bolts to the floor. If they are missing the tailgate will rattle.

The black plastic guides are wedge shaped to guide the tailgate latch into the floor latch.

I adjusted the catch on the boot, pull the silver trim up, undo the catch and slide it so it grabs tighter.

Takes 10 minutes.
