w203 estate - Tailgate Won't open

I unlocked the car with the remote fob as usual. The Mrs may have been holding the boot handle as I did so, she says she wasn't but I'm not too sure. The boot will not open now. I've locked and unlocked the car several times from the fob, and from the internal switch. I've also tried unlocking the boot manually with the key, but it still doesn't release.

I've checked all the fuses relating to the central locking/boot release and they're all fine....

It's a 2002 c180 Avantgarde if that makes any difference....

Any ideas?

Finally managed to get it open from the inside by pushing down on a grey metal rachet which opens it.

It wasn't until I took the mechanism apart that I worked out that the boot could have been opened from the outside by turning the key to the left and pulling the handle simultaneously......
