I live in a very urban area in inner city London and on average im getting 20mpg according to my dash computer is this correct. I have a 2005 c180k petrol auto with 28000 on the clock. Also I do drive pretty rough, but I would like some feedback.

Thanks

that not right mate

I would actually say that's normal...Start/stop city driving kills MPG and since it's a 1.8 petrol, 20mpg around town is not too bad.

I get around 25 from my E220.

hmm so blackman you think its normal? im not sure I was going to take it into MB workshop but in London they are all ****e, im actually considering taking the car to Olly and doing a full vehicle check despite him being over 70miles away.

I think that is probably about right as well. Two reasons I say this:

1) I recently had a 2002 C180k as a courtesy car whilst mine was in the garage. Used it to drive across Bristol in rush hour a few times, and typically got that sort of mpg.

2) Chap at work has a 2005 C180k automatic saloon. He lives in Weston Super Mare, and works in Bristol, so encounters traffic congestion, but probably not on at London levels. Asked him about mpg, and he responded that on the motorway he gets up to 35mpg, but around town it is low 20s. He finds the C180k less economical than his previous C200k, and intends to go diesel on his next car change.

Regarding MB workshops in London, have a look at the section on MB specialists across the UK. Sure there have been some recomendations for London.

thats not right try braking less and only acceleration easily

hammering it all day that is what you will get 20 mpg

I think you guys are right as I just came back from a 3mile journey at 1 am and I easily got it up to 25.7 mpg by driving less harshly and at 30mph also there was no traffic, I believe that if the journey was longer I could have easily got it up to 30mpg driving the way I did just now.

remember also that fuel is now around £6.00 a gallon,my 1995 c180 manual petrol gets 27mpg ish on a runaround to asda etc but if i fly about and hit the accelerator then i go down to 20mpg

i have a 203 and i got 30 just driving normal and its 2.6L on the motorway i got 37.2!!!.

i seem never to fill up my c180 202.... i just cant remember the last time i filled up. must be doing a steady 30+mpg.

but to be honest i couldent care if my cars where doing 2mpg.. mpg is a pretty good indicator on how good a engine is running and if its been maintained well..

LOL lot of mixed opinions in this thread.

Mate how in the heck do you get such good MPG for a 2.6l car.

no idea...low mileage?? who knows i have the evidence to back it up as well lol..
but to be honest the V6's are a lot smoother and require less power to get rolling = better mpg... the supercharged engines imho are rough and unrefined (My CLK230k is a nice looking and fast car but absolutely horrible for long drives and city driving), this is the reason that benz is moving away from superchargers.

speaking of mercedes moving away from things,is it me or do the benz grill badges look crap,i prefer the upright bonnet badge, did they have to change for a daft law against bonnet badges being unsafe in an accident or something ? or was it just a move away ? or am i missing something

Thats about right sadly. They arent great when cold and in stop start traffic. I moaning about mine here:

Sounds about right.

Remember at 0mph you are doing 0mpg! So if you are stationary for 20mins of a 30min journey as is often the case in inner London this will seriously impact your average mpg for the journey.

hi got a 2006 c180k avan auto with 35000, i always take off gently and never allow my revs to go beyond 2000 rp what ever and i do drive in the city, i am talking abt kings cross station areas and down to liverpool street station to pick up/ drop the wife and i always achieve around 25mpg. on long distances i do get at times 36mpg. easy on the throttle buddy

A few years ago I had the misfortune to live in Selly Oak, Birmingham, and work in Solihull. That was an 8 mile drive, which involved lots of sitting stationary in traffic. At worst, around Chrsitmas time, this 8 mile drive would take around an hour and a half. I had a 230E at the time, and worked out (no trip computer) that I was getting around 8-10mpg. That was what made me switch to diesel, a 202 series C220cdi, then a 210 series 320cdi. But even in these diesels, doing the same journey under these same conditions, i.e. lots of sitting in traffic at the coldest time of the year, I got as low as 19mpg some mornings.

I concur here with the above quote - I have the same model and same year, but a compressor.I commute 12 miles a day to work.In summer I manage 40-42 mpg - in winter 36-40 mpg - but for short town driving - even in 'c ' mode, not ' s ' - 18 - 20 is about right,as the engine does not get up to optimum operating temperature.I once got 55 mpg out of it - light footwork and a lovely warm run to Harrogate. For town driving, that model is terrible - thinking about it now - I rather miss my VW Diesel Golf :(
