In uumode's thread about his W210 having corrosion problems, I posted that my Sept 2000 W203 had no rust. However a more thorough look underneath the car today confirmed my worst fears - the W203s are susceptable to rust as well.
The rust on mine is at at the back just behind the differential, on a couple of seams of the bodyshell on the boot floorpan. At the moment it is not serious, a couple of seams are just starting to show some surface rust and there are a couple of other odd patches. A quick going over with a wire brush and a couple of coats of Waxoyl have, I believe, solved the problem. However, I wonder what lies behind the plastic underbody covers.
What really shocks me though, it that there is precious little underbody perotection. Many of the exposed surfaces just seem to have a thin coat of paint and this surely is inadequate for a car that is supposed to have a 30 year rust warranty.
I should have taken some pics of the affected areas before sealing them, so that you all could have seen the problem. so if anyone else has a W203 that is a few years old, I would advise them having a check underneath to see if there is a problem developing.
