W204 2012 7spd Autobox

I've noticed this evening that if I tap the gearshift to the left whilst the gearbox is in 'Drive' the dash display changes from just 'D' to D and the current gear number, ie D3.

Is this normal?

Apart from altering the gearbox setting to S or M I can't find a way to revert back to just D.

Push gearstick left to change down as you discovered, right to change up.

To get back to D hold it to the right for a second or two.

If in D you hold it left for a second or two it'll drop to the most responsive gear... grest for overtaking

If you aren't familiar with the 7g auto box, you should read the appropriate section in the driver's manual to understand its features and quirks.

Yep, it caught me out early on- coming from manual boxes, I had a habit of resting my hand on the lever- didn't noticed I'd tapped it left and restricted the gear range, had me worried when it didn't change beyond 3rd.

There's also a bit in the book on restricting the ranges for tackling steep inclines, might be handy one day.
