i have a c class 08 220 cdi that's just been serviced by mercedes and they advised that the auxiliary belt is cracked and needs changing they quoted 178 to do it, is it an easy job to do? i'm an engineer by trade so fairly competent any info appreciated

Not sure of the set up on your car, but I've changed several of these on a Sprinter and 210 and it really isn't a big job on those vehicles, perhaps half an hour at the most IIRC. The dealership will have everything in place to make the job as easy as possible, so the price sounds excessive.

If doing the change yourself, just remember to draw or get a printed diagram of the configuration and you should be fine.

Edit: Find the location of the belt tensioning pulley and work out whether it is easier to access from above or below the engine.
