My car doesnt have digital climate control, but under the bonnet has what seems to be an air box labelled as the air conditioner or something to that effect.

Does this mean i have ac?

Shouldnt there be a button on the dash or does it just come on when cold air is selected?

Cheers

Do you have an EC button?

If so then you have AC. The EC (Economy) button is to turn the AC off, otherwise it is on by default.

Yes there is an EC button, so that means when cold is selected, a/c is always on???

kinda strange move by MB but i believe you!

Yes ,unless you press the E/C button and the LED comes on-then its off.

AC is on whatever the temperature.

Not really an odd decision, I guess most MB drivers like me never turn the AC off, hence why have an "on" button.

if you roll the thumbwheels to the coldest setting the air con disengages
without having to select the ec mode ,hth

That's interesting. You would have thought it would give you the coldest air the aircon can give.

Do you know the theory/logic behind this CLKBOY?

erk.... if this is right then I have spent all summer with the air con switched 'off'.......

clkboy prob meant to warmest setting

You should all leave your ac on all the time, i.e EC light off. Not running the ac pump causes the seals to crack and cause a leak.
Then summer will come, a/c will not work, you will get it recharged, it will work for two weeks untill all the gas leaks back out... Eventually you will have a big bill for replacing condensor etc etc

Leave the a/c on, it makes sense!...

trouble is, I hate a/c ..

so I run it for 30 mins at least once a week, and that seems to do the trick

My understanding is that the air conditioning is ON all the time regardless of where the temperature dials are unless the EC button is illuminated, indicating that the ECononmy mode is selected.

Air conditioning also dehumidifies the air which makes it better for clearing misted windows. When the temperature dials are at any position except fully cold, the system works by maintaing the desired temperature by altering the air temperature. When the dials are both fully down, towards the cold past the 'click' then the system will also adjust the fan speed to rapidly lower the temperature. Mercedes call this semi-automatic air conditioning rather than full blown climate control.
