W210 320 CDI engine problemette

well the picture is too dark to see but I'd say the cam cover is off so probably blowby at the injectors.

Oh, that looks nasty.

How many miles and any givaway signs first.?

Having seen those last pics I would have said the chain had come adrift ( But you can still see it so not that)or the cam had snapped at the front shoulder throwing the chain and gear upwards.

Saw the chain was making a bid when I posted.

I think the tensioner or tensioner guide has given up the ghost.

So what's the full extent of the damage?

Sorry about the delay fellas, still trying to upload the remaining photos.

I had just turned out of a junction and was accelerating away when the engine went phut (absolutely nothing spectacular!) and died with a warning on the dash saying EPC visit workshop. I knocked it into neutral and coasted to a safer place to stop and tried for a restart.
No start but an unusually fast turnover. So time for recovery.:(

Recovered to Ollies premises at Horndean who discovered this mess.

Car has covered 106K miles, last service 5 weeks and 6K miles ago.

Cam shaft has snapped, chain has broken,
probably valves bent, pistons damaged:eek:

MB wanted £8.5k for the engine plus fitting. The car is not worth that much so Ollie is sourcing a replacement engine to fit.

Thanks Dieselman still coming to terms with photo hosting and adding photos to posts on the forum.:o

Still initially I didn't want to give the game away all at once;)

Well that's pretty unusual and really bad luck.

I wonder what went first the chain or cam?

I've seen a cam snapped on a Peugeot so know it can happen, but think the chain guide went so jammed the chain and snapped the cam then chain.

No idea at the moment, but Ollie is keen to findout so will probably strip down the engine once it is out and the replacement is running.

Hey people

Will post when i find cause

The chain is loose and can be pulled up  Normally they are endless this one now has two ends!

Steve

Hi.

I managed to source an engine for Steves car and I have removed the old one.

I found both cam shafts snapped in a few places. The chain has been torn apart too.

Also it seems the tappets have gone completely solid. Also most of the valves seem to be stuck open????

I don't think I will ever know the real cause.

I Swapped over the ancilleries of the new engine and popped it in today. All went well and the engine is running.

I just have to finish it off tuesday and take it for a run to see if everthing is ok.

After a few niggles all is well in the CDI camp.

Steve took the car back today and I am really chuffed with the outcome.

Good work Ollie :-)

Out of interest what was the final cost? I'm sure it's much less than the Mercedes quote!

Hi all,

As Ollie said in his posting, I got my car back last night.:bannana:

This morning took it for its morning constitutional (commute to work) did about 40 miles on rural roads and gave it a good trial! :)

I am very pleased with the result.:bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

I now have a car that has over 106K miles on the clock with a much 'younger' engine (about 33K miles). Whilst the car was in ollies hands he also checked the cross members for corrosion and treated what little there was, changed the roll bar bushes, new engine mounts, changed the power steering fluid as well as all the work on the engine swapping over the ancillaries. During the swap over he found that the vacuum pump and the fuel pump at the front of the engine needed replacing.

The original problem I had whilst visiting Eastern Europe of the engine cutting out returned, and Ollie found rusty deposits in the bowl of the fuel filter, obviously picked up a lot of muck from one of the filling stations. Ollie cleaned that out and has asked me to take the car back to him next week to check the bowl once more to see if any more muck is present.

On top of that Ollie valeted the car for me.

Well done Ollie. You get my vote.

For info the total bill was about a third of what Mercedes wanted for the full job.

Steve

I am pleased you are pleased. Lol. The sense of achievement was massive.

BTW MB wanted £8,000 just for the engine!!

Next.........
