W210 auto rear view mirror

This is just a curiosity question. My 210 has a small yellow light on the bottom of my interior rear view mirror that comes on when the car is switched on. No mention of it in the handbook.

What function does it serve Any clues anyone

Gentle glow to illuminate the gearlever & console area when its dark.

The BMWs do the same only in red.
