I've read about the w210 having power assisted boot closing. Was this standard on all of them.Mine either doesn't have it or it is broken.

The S210 estate closure is power-assisted, you lower it yourself then give it a little push and it goes clunk-hiss and it pulls itself shut.

Not sure of the point of this system. :dk:

My '99 W210 estate has the 'power close' on the tailgate. Can't remember from the brochures at the time if it was standard or an option.

Frankly I fail to see the point of it on the tailgate - it just pulls the tailgate onto the catch but you still have to pull the tailgate down until its virtually shut, so why not go the added couple of centimetres??!! Besides its a guaranteed way to smash your rear screen if you happen to have a bulky load (e.g. wardrobe, garden bench etc.) inside that slightly protrudes beyond where the screen in the closed position rests. I doubt the power close will stop if it encounters resistance, and at least without power close you have the abilty to check the load and clearance without the risk of popping the screen!

I'm not sure the E-Klass S210 is quite as roomy as the Volvo245, but I did get a bed in that, plus three flattened wardrobes and some cabinets, and some general rubbish. All at once.

Get a big estate and the family use it as a garbage scow.

Not impossible, but I don't think there's much chance of popping the glass.

The E class estate is much bigger than a 245. And yes you can get a full size single bed with mattress and drawers in the back of the E Class.

The E124 is slightly bigger than the 210, just enough difference to allow a matress to fit. Also, 2.60m planks fit slightly easier over the front seat of the 124, but both are equally good at transporting rubble. However, a Peugeot 505 estate beats both easily.
Both mine have electrical assistance on the boots, it is a good idea that avoids the need to slam the bloody thing shut causing further unnecessary stress to my already abused cars.

No way, you are going to SLAM the boot shut for the last 2cm instead of having it gently pulled shut. You are more likely to be getting new glass. MB system also ensures that the boot is always shut properly

Hmm, the 245 was 4.79 to 4.90 metres long depending on year with a very long rear bay. The E124 estate was 4.765 metre length. The S210 I can't find dimensions but W210 given as 4.81 metres so I fancy the rear load volume is wider but a bit shorter and lower than the 245, given the cabin is more roomy.

I seem to remember getting a 3m long IKEA bookcase into the 245. You can get that full size single bed into the 245, plus three knocked-down wardrobes and assorted junk - at the same time ;-)

The 505 was 4.898 x 1.730 vs 245 = 4.785 x 1.707 i.e very similar size.
