Just picked up an E300 (Lovely motor by the way)

Anyway the box changes silky smooth all up the rev range. Except from 2nd to 3rd on wide open throttle. It will just sit at redline and not shift up at all. I have to back off let it wind down then ease on the throttle so it changes up. Tried this on the manual 1-2-3 bit and it was the same. Whats that all about?

Also, does this box sit in neutral when you come to a junction? Ive when im coming upto a t junction or something and coming to a slow stop, when I put me foot down to get out it delays and then I feel it select a gear and take off. Not too fussed about this one though!

How strong are these gear boxes? Can they take a remap?

Also have a separate issue regarding the brakes... ive noticed the cruise control keeps cutting off sometimes... realised after fiddling today that the brake pedal sometimes sticks down a little (sometimes applying the brakes to notice there is no surge when you accelerate)

I can rectify this by putting my foot under the pedal and pulling it up. Does this sound like a stiff pedal? Or a brake issue....

Cheers guys :D

Feels good to be back in a merc!

Chris

The brake pedal might be the cause of the gearbox behavior, other wise the MAF sensor.
I sounds like the return spring might be at fault or no free play set. also check the brake switch is set properly.

At junctions if you have just arrived then go to pull off again, they tend to be lazy changing down, so it has to select 1st from 2nd then apply power.

Have you checked the gearbox fluid?

Ive looked for the dipper but couldnt find it. I found what looks like it should be on the turbo side at the back of the engine. Pulled the top off and it was just a plastic cover no dipper. Looks like the dipper bit snapped off lol. >.<

There is no dipstick. You'll have to buy one and then dip the fluid down the tube with a cap that you've already found.

first port of call then auto box dipstick. Can anyone recommend one from ebay? Anyone know the gearbox code?

Seemed sluggish on the way home today too.

Chris

dipstick ordered.

Also ive noticed that sometimes the car doesn't pull as well. As this isn't me just going "I feel something" or some crap. It literally takes like 3/4 throttle to get it to move from a standstill, and on full throttle it struggles to get near or above 3k. Park it up at work, drive it after and its fine.... Seems intermittent. Going down the parkway today it wouldn't go into top gear (4th on these??) so it was revving 3k at 60mph. Next roundabout, back onto parkway and now wouldn't go into the one below top gear (3rd) So its revving 3.5k at 55mph.

Left it at my friends for 10 mins, drove home and it was fine...

What the hell......

It's going into limp home mode. Suspect it may need a new MAF as said above.

Or another reason, such as the EGR valve or turbo modulator playing up.

No errors on dash though??

Also maf sensor on a diesel?!

Dipped oil and none showing on dipstick.

Anyone know what fluid they take?

Chris

Hi Palmer :)
My name is Tiago, from Portugal, have a E270 cdi and like you said "Also ive noticed that sometimes the car doesn't pull as well. As this isn't me just going "I feel something" or some crap. It literally takes like 3/4 throttle to get it to move from a standstill"....

Did you manage to fix it?

Happy new year to all of you.
Thanks,
Tiago
