Ok appears to be coming from the front of the block, looking at the front of the engine, on the right hand side. Sorry can't be any more specific but as you can imagine there is oil everywhere and i need a dry day to clean off the excess and find the leak, but are there any known weak points?

Thanks

Nic

Head gasket right front corner also clean it up and check the alloy washer for the chain tensioner, this happened on wifes old e320 which iirc is the 104 lump which yours is based on.

Not hard to do head is pretty heavy though.

I would agree - the M104 is pretty well known for leaking oil from the head.

I've heard that the oil level on these M104s should be slightly lower than the max mark - one of the members on here mentioned it came from a MB TSB?

what abt front cranshaft oil seal?, id say go see a good indi for his opinion

front crankshaft seal went on Nats estate - this was sending oil back on both sides and the bottom of the block due to the flow of air over it so it does not sound the same in this instance. Mine was changed recently (nods in direction of IBW@124 works) and the problem cured (did help that the HG was changed a number of years ago)

From intial inspection i'm going with the crankshaft seal, i'll let you know how i get on.

It is such a common issue for the CHG to leak oil on the 104 engine. The way I normally decide if it is worth doing is if there is a drip forming on the sump pan.

Yes :)

Weird but the w124 E36 we have has only required one HG in 240,000 miles and never spat this much oil out, ah well, joys of buying a car with no service history :D
