Car
2005 W215 CL500.
The bracket on the rear silencer of my w210 estate has rusted through and is currently hanging by a thread. I have looped a wire coat hanger around the silencer and the heat deflector plate to catch it when/if it drops. I have seen a post regarding welding this up, by 230K. But, how is the rear box removed??

You may have to split the system further up the car if it's the original exhaust.

Had mine 'temporarily' welded in situ more than two years ago and it's still holding!

I bought one from Kwikfit, corroded within twelve months, replaced without any fuss. Two years later the mounting bracket broke. Welded in situ by local garage for a tenner. Still going strong 3 years later. I am content!

Thanks for your very kind offer. I've sent you a PM.

What a great forum!!

Well went to 230k's last night following his kind offer. Put the car up on his lift and proceeded to try and dismantle the exhaust! No go. The centre joints would not budge. Ended up taking off the undertray and disconnecting below the first cat, this was very easy. 230k did all the work I was stood there supporting the silencer on my head like Atlas until we could lower it to the floor.

Once down the bracket was in a very poor state but 230K built up a great big mound of weld and it'll never move again. However, there were also a couple of small holes so he cut a patch from an old washing machione and welded that in also.

When done the system was again easy to replace. I asked about my low ride height...two broken springs at the front. Then removed the steel sump guard ( an optional extra ) to look at the front cross member... not too bad.

The rest of the underside was in very good shape, especially considering it had never been Waxoyled .

All in all 4 hours, including looking up the EPC and WIS about various things. My point is we had never met before, and he went out of his way ( and his glass of white wine ) to help me. A very large thank-you from me and I hope a few pats on the back from y'all.

One year on, and an update. This day last year 230K did the above repair on my rear box. I've covered 12,000 miles and the repair is as good as the day it was done. Cheers Brian.

Another update.

The exhaust went through, and passed it's third MOT since being repaired. Good job Brian. Many thanks.

Spend your money you tight bugger ;)
