Looks as though Olly is right; no surprise there.
When I put a 6/12A battery charger on the pump, correct polarity, whether on low or high rate, the needle goes right up to the top end of the scale (12A). Cranking, there's about 9v appearing at the pump terminals, but still no pressure in the fuel rail. The pump does in fact make a slight sound; that hum you get when an electric motor is trying to turn, but can't. Seized, I reckon. I hope this information helps someone else.
Wish it had waited until the car was parked in my drive, not an airport car park at midnight!
I won't go for a Bosch pump, though; it turns out that WIS lists a Pierburg pump as OE, and that's what is on the car, so I'll go for that.
Happily, ECP have an offer on the Pierburg (OE) pump (£110), so I'm picking one up tomorrow. I don't have a pipe clamping tool as such to prevent the inlet pipe from tank to pump leaking when it's disconnected, but a straight-jaw mole grip wrench, with rubber piping over the jaws to prevent damage to the clamped pipe, has worked well in the past, and I see no reason to think it will not do so now.
Does anyone think it essential to replace the crimped fastening clips on the pressurised outlet pipe with other crimped items, or will stainless Jubilee clips do the job? System datum pressure is only 4 bar; we're not talking diesels here.
