I need to carry 2 mountain bikes using my W211, never done this before so thought id ask on here, do i go for roof mount or rear boot mount?

Will be using it occasionally so easy removal is preferred.

I haven't got roof bars either!

Need to start shaping up for coming holiday:doh:

If you are a regular cyclist don't go for either of the options, muddy bike on the roof drops debris and scratches, boot mount will move about, any dirt under the pads will mark the paint. Bite the bullet ... Fit a tow bar and get a tow mount rack, not the cheapest option but no damage.
If not, I would go for a good quality boot mount, clean before fitting and ensure tight, to reduce movement.

Well what a coincidence. Just fitted these to my CLS today.

They were also on my W211 quite often, same bars and feet. but only carried the two smaller boys bikes. Bought the third bike carrier today and fitted my bike.

The W211 kit you'll need from Thule was 3026, they have since upgraded and re-numbered.

Total weight is 55Kg incl all carriers and bars, roof limit 75Kg, so should be OK. When all fitted tight and locked, very secure. Bars lock to roof, carriers lock to bars and bikes lock to carriers.

I would not go for the cheaper rear mount that you just strap on with foam pads onto the rear and bumper. I fitted a borrowed one today, and not at all happy with its fit or security. Would not be comfortable with one of these two bike carriers, they seem a bit 'heath robinson' in the design and stability.

Its a choice between roof as I have done or rear tow bar mounted carrier, of course you'll need a tow bar, perhaps more expense, not an option on a CLS.

The roof bars are more versatile and perhaps less expensive in total.

When I met some long distance cyclists on the Eurotunnel, they all had tow-bar mounted carriers.

Many thanks for the info.

If you have not got a towbar it could be pricey, this is a great bit of kit though...

Folds down with bikes on to access the boot, very solid (I have the three bike version now) and it good for 'cough' 71mph...

Also mpg doesn't seem to be a problem, roof box and this on my estate still gave 38mpg

I have pro rack whisp bar roof bars and a Thule roof mounted bike rack and am very happy for the occasional use they get. Pretty quiet and very little difference from normal driving despite having a sail mounted on the roof!

I don't like the idea of mounting bikes across the tailgate because they add to the width of the car.

Can I ask why the roof mounted carriers are likely to result in scratches? Had not considered this.

Thule aero bars and 532 bike carriers on the 't-bolts' - I run with 4 bikes on the roof of my W210 and it's all a very easy solution. I think roofracks.co.uk had an escalating discount depending on the number of carriers bought when I got mine, but the whole set including locks was less than £250 in 2009.

Just left a weekend of camping/cycling with my fellow campers faffing around with their boor mounted carriers. Took me less than 5 minutes to load all four bikes. Also we could load boot and roof at the same time.

^ they are not really any wider than your car (and mirrors) so nothing to worry about in that department.

They keep bug free also being on the back :)

Same with this, clamps on in seconds and ratchet straps for bikes. 3 bikes fully secure in minuites, Longer than it take me to wheel the bikes out of the garage :)

Forgot to mention - I have actually had a bike stolen from one of these roof mounted carriers - they are not built to stop a determined thief. Suppose that is true whatever type of carrier you use though.

^ True,

Our rack locks to the cars towball, then each arm locks to frame. Then I lock them together using two U locks and a long extension if someone wants them they will have them. I like to at least make it hard :)

The latest generation of strap-on jobbies may be better than the one I had a few years ago, but however carefully and tightly it was fitted, there was always slight movement which damaged the paintwork. Ok on solid/flat paint, but not on metallic.

I used a Paddy Hopkirk brand towbar mounted 2 bike rack for years with no problems, but no towbar on my (leased) MB, so plan B may be a towbar being put on Mrs Baxlin's Skoda....
