Hi

Really need some help with this please.

So the two errors I am getting are :

Display faulty visit workshop (key symbol)
And
Display faulty visit workshop (light bulb symbol)

The fault only appears when I switch off the car .

When I switch the ignition back on there is no error on the dash.

When driving I can’t find any problems, everything I can see works.

The only thing that I can see playing up is my front parking sensors which beep and then show two red lights on either side ( like it does when I am parking very close to the vehicle in front) but it’s doing it randomly while driving

Now I’ve taken the car to my mb specialist and he has told me he can’t pin point the error because the fault is not staying on the dash.

He did clear all faults. But still same problem.

It doesn’t happen all the time either just now and again.

P.s I did get “SRS fault visit workshop” for a few seconds yesterday but nothing since.

What kind of mb specialist says he can't pin point it because the fault wasn't on at the time? if hes a "mb specialist" he must have star or something close, tell him to hook it up to the diagnostic tool he has and diagnose it, even if the faults not staying it'll still be stored meaning he'll be able to see exactly what it was even when the fault isn't occurring..

His reasoning was that the errors are throwing up so many codes on the STAR diagnostic as he has told me there could be multiple reasons why this error is coming up, but because there are so many codes he cant pin point the exact module which is faulty. He has a very good reputation on forums hence how I found him.

Who is it?

Yes, Terry is very good.

Multiple unrelated electrical issues could result from a bad battery, faulty SAM unit, poor Ground connection, water or oil ingress into wiring loom, bad or coroded contacts (e.g. on fuse box).... etc. Not easy to resolve without replacing parts one at a time.

Yes i agree his always been spot on in regards to my car.

He probably know's I don't want to change multiple parts for it not to resolve the issue as the cost can rise very fast which would be a waste of his time and my money.

He did test the battery & alternator not too long ago as my battery completely drained but was only a few months old and there were no faults showing and it hasn't drained since then, is there anyway of testing the battery control module ? not quite sure what other options I have available

So I’m re opening this as I am still getting the same problems but now I am getting srs and esp fault, also after these two faults the car will not recognise the key but it will start the car, anyone had similar issues? I have read around and see some people have had these issues but i can’t see a post for the resolution. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Would the Electronic Ignition Switch possibly be the root cause of these errors?

It is responsible for the initial power up of many circuits?

Would I be able to check this myself ? Also everything powers up fine, most of the errors occur while driving or when I shut down the car

Usually is a faulty instrument cluster that is the cause. I use Cartronix to fix mine.

The full issue is that I when driving (after a short while, 5mins) I get two display faults pop up on the dash (one with a key symbol and the other with a light bulb), the front parking sensors also come on sporadically, there may be the odd flash of the "SRS" light (for a split second) and sometimes the indicators will go in an unusual rhythm (when indicating to turn). However driving the car is not impacted at all, and I can finish my journey perfectly safely (seemingly) and with the instruments all reading correctly.

When I ran a scan of the errors (I cleared all the codes and then drove again so that I could re-read the 'real' errors) I got these:

IC Cluster errors:
  • 9110 (stored) - the instrument cluster no longer transmits over interior can data us. Status CAN bus off.
  • 9111 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit EIS electronic ignition switch
  • 9112 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit rear SAM
  • 9113 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control module Dr-side SAM or Pass-side SAM
  • 9114 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit RCP roof control panel
  • 9115 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit air conditioning
  • 9116 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit N72/1 (upper control panel unit)
  • 9119 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit Pass-side SAM
  • 911D (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit steering column module
  • 9125 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit airbag
  • 9126 (stored) - Fault in CAN communication with control unit audio gateway
  • 9128 (stored) - The supply voltage of the control unit is too low (under voltage)
  • 9133 (stores) - CAN signal battery voltage is implausible
  • Driver side SAM signal acquisitions and actuation module (8 faults)
  • Passenger side SAM signal acquisitions and actuation module (5 faults)
  • Rear SAM signal acquisitions and actuation module (8 faults)
For background the car had been running fine, I recently changed a rear passenger side airbag (air strut) and when I came to re-use the car afterwards these issues arose (the car battery was disconnected for about 3 weeks while the work was done).

Given the number of errors cropping up the two highlighted in blue make me suspect an electrical issue somewhere that is affecting the power to the various modules, does that seem logical?

Where would you start to determine where the cause is?

Thanks.

I would get it plugged in to a Xentry (Star) by someone that knows them well. BTW I have an E55....
